Fritzinger is girls champ; Hornets earn team title

The Emmaus golf team is now a perfect three for three.

Two weeks after simultaneously winning both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) regular season and tournament, the Hornets added their second consecutive district crown on Monday afternoon at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.

All five Hornets shot an 84 or below, led by Class AAA girls champion Samantha Fritzinger, who shot 75. Max Harrington (78), Kevin Caverly (80), Kelsey Patterson (82) and Patrick Bryan (84) rounded out the Hornets' scorers who will advance to regionals on Friday at Woodstone Golf Club in Danielsville.

Nazareth finished in second place with a 325 combined score, 10 points behind Emmaus' winning total of 315.

"It feels good to sweep it," Caverly said. "It was nice to beat Nazareth because they beat us earlier [in the season]."

Fritzinger stood alone amongst AAA competition after outlasting Freedom's Helen Hsu (78) and Patterson, who finished in second and third place, respectively. She recorded five birdies on the day.

"Most of the time I was shooting pretty well," Fritzinger said. "My putting was pretty good. I was able to come back from a lot of stuff with it."

Other than a few hiccups to begin and end her round, Fritzinger's performance was a consistent showing worthy of a spot in regionals.

"My first two holes and last three holes were bad," Fritzinger said. "The rest were good."

Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado led AA girls competition with an 84.

Caverly didn't have the greatest startbogeys on his first three holesbut he remained focused in closing out strong over the final nine holes.

"From my seventh hole to my 16th hole, I think I only missed two greens," Caverly said.

"I didn't put well, but I hit it really good. I figured if I putted a little better, it could have been a little lower. But I was happy."

By virtue of a two-hole playoff, Northampton's Carter Test edged out Freedom's Zach Juhasz for first in Class AAA with a round of 73. Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff shot a 74 and earned gold in Class AA. Moravian Catholic won the Class AA team competition with a score of 323.

While the team advances to Friday's regional team playoff, Harrington moves on to next week's individual regional tournament at Golden Oaks Golf Course in Fleetwood where he'll try to earn a trip to states.
