Field hockey gets revenge on Trojans

Coming into the season, Emmaus field hockey head coach Sue Butz-Stavin said there was a lot of work to be done to rebuild a team that was hit hard by graduation. The rebuilding process turned into more of just a retooling process. A 3-1 win over Parkland Saturday put Emmaus at 15-0-1 on the season and helped to avenge their only blemish, a tie that came at Parkland back on September 12th.

The win followed an 8-0 dismantling of a good Northampton team earlier in the week when Emmaus played a near flawless game. Butz-Stavin can be hard to please, but even she thought that win was one to remember.

"It was beautiful to watch," said Butz-Stavin of the win over Northampton. "And then you get a game like this. It wasn't the best execution, but we did have some starring moments that were a resemblance of the other night."

Those starring moments included sophomore Meredith Sholder and senior Tara Tracchio combining to score all three goals. Sholder scored two first-half goals on assists from Tracchio, who tallied the final goal off of an assist from Sholder. That last goal gave Emmaus a bit of a cushion after Parkland had cut the Emmaus lead to 2-1. Juggling where some players were playing has helped Emmaus' transition game and made the tandem of Tracchio and Sholder a dangerous combination.

"So far, so good," said Butz-Stavin. "You have to include Coop [Alicia Cooperman] in that too, because they're all part of that combination. It's the transition explosiveness right now that's really nice to watch."

The day was particularly good for Tracchio, because it not only provided some revenge against Parkland, but her strong performance came on Senior Day. She was also excited to pair up with Sholder on the scoring, since she considers her a good friend.

"It's awesome, especially since it's a revenge game and we got the win against a big rival. It's really cool," said Tracchio. "We've always been pretty good friends and we've played together for the past couple of years, so that definitely helps. There's something about us where we just sort of feed off of each other."

After this season, Tracchio will head to the University of Delaware, where she'll be reunited with Emmaus graduates Allie and Krissy Mikelson, who Tracchio is good friends with. Allie is currently a junior and Krissy is a freshman. Tracchio is looking forward to the upcoming reunion.

"I'm really excited, because I was pretty good friends with both of the Mikelson girls and I look up to them, because they're both so good and I'm excited that I'll get to play with them again," said Tracchio. "I really love the school and they have a lot of majors, because I'm not really sure what I want to do yet and they have lots of options. I also like the field and the coaching staff and the team atmosphere. I really liked everything when I was there."
