Bonge, Long compete at district golf championship
With one golfer from the Lehigh Valley withdrawing from Monday's District 11 Golf Championships, another had the opportunity to compete in the tournament after missing the cut from last week's qualifiying round.
That player turned out to be Salisbury's Kody Long.
Joining Long was Jack Bonge, who earned a spot in districts with a 95 at the qualifying round, the last score to make the cut. And while the two would have liked to have shoot better rounds, the Falcons' duo had an opportunity to taste district golf competition on Monday at Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort.
Bonge, who aimed for a round of 78, struggled to find any rhythm on the course after fairing well on Thursday's practice round at Shawnee. Back-to-back triple-bogeys in the middle of his round ultimately led to an 18-over par 90. Long shot a 13-over par 85.
"I hit the ball well here on Thursday," Bonge said. "I played pretty well. We didn't really keep score, but I felt like I played better than I did today.
"The target score coming in was 78, because I felt that was something I could easily get. I felt even after the first holes that I was still on track, and I could still achieve that."
Bonge shot 42 on Red Course's nine holes after posting a 48 on the first nine holes on the Blue Course.
"I was knocking the ball all over the place," Bonge said. "In the beginning I was hitting the ball well. Fairways and greens were common in the beginning, but in the end they were real hard to come by."
After surviving the tough part of the Blue Course to begin his round, Bonge thought he had an opportunity to put together a consistent finish together. Instead, it was a number of costly mistakes that trickled as the round progressed.
"I started off with a few tough starting holes," Bonge said. "So I knew if I kept it with mostly pars in the beginning, I would be fine later in the end, which I started doing, but it fell off about the ninth hole."
For Long, it was his second-consecutive trip to the district level. Last year he shot an 87 at Blue Ridge Country Club for 10th place in Class AA.
Northampton's Carter Test won a two-hole playoff over Freedom's Zach Juhasz, and shot a 73 to secure first in Class AAA competition. Bethlehem Catholic's Nick Maff shot a 74 and came in first in AA. Emmaus' Samantha Fritzinger earned first in AAA girls with a 75, and Central Catholic's Franca Hurtado shot the top spot in AA with an 84. Emmaus (AAA) and Moravian Catholic (AA) won the team titles.
