NW girls volleyball gets revenge on JT
The Northwestern girls' volleyball didn't quite forget what happened earlier this month in Jim Thorpe.
Monday night in New Tripoli the Lady Tigers had a chance to redeem themselves against an Olympian squad that stole a nonconference victory over them back on September 8.
The Lady Tigers got what they wanted in the second meeting between the two teams, earning a bit of redemption a 25-12, 25-19, 25-17 victory.
"We really needed to pull together as a team because if we don't, we tend to fall apart and we get down on ourselves," said senior Abbie Monks. "We came together, played as a team and we pulled out a win.
"We were so proud of ourselves because we were so close to beating them last time. This time, we just pushed it over the edge and we finally won."
The Tigers opened all three games Monday's match down by one point. After that small deficit, the hosts took a lead in the first game and never relinquished, pulling ahead 12-6 and 20-8 before earning the 13-point win.
"It's always a goal to get as many attacks on the ball as possible," said senior setter Nicki Generose said. "But, it's always a good idea to play smart as well. We like to say on our team, 'A kill is a kill.' It doesn't matter if you hit the ball with authority or whether you simply set the ball over the net.
"Any way you can get the ball on the floor is a great play."
The second game saw 11 ties and 13 lead changes before the Tigers were finally able to pull out the final eight points to capture the middle game.
It's not the way Generose wanted it to pan out for her team, but she was glad they found it within themselves to pull it together and take a two game lead.
"This always seems to be a Northwestern speciality," Generose added. "We tend to dig ourselves into a hole and thankfully we always seem to come out of it. I think it's great for morale and it's always really good to be with your teammates and keep a positive attitude."
That positive attitude carried straight through into the third and final game of the night. There were five ties and six more lead changes and the Tigers saw themselves down three times by three points, but Monks and her teammates unified themselves on the main idea sealing that all-important victory.
Monks fueled the Tigers toward victory. She served seven aces to help her team build a comfortable 22-13.
"We were down (12-13 when she took over with the serve), and I was like, 'Come on, we have to do this.' So, when I got up there, I was so confident in my swinging that I made some nice tosses and I got it over the net and strong enough that they couldn't return it. And, then I would try to mix it up with a short one."
But, with Jim Thorpe's Erin Shigo getting the last serve, which eventually sailed out of bounds as well, the hosts walked off with the victory they wanted in the worst way.
"This is so exciting," Generose said. "We went to five games in Jim Thorpe. And, I love the energy of their gym. They just have so many members of their community come out. It's always disheartening to lose up there.
"It's great to be back here in the Tiger gym. It's great to see so many people come out. I love coming here. I love playing here. And, it was a great win."
