Falcons win third in a row

Tevon Weber didn't have many mistakes in another stellar performance on Friday night against Pen Argyl.

But an interception just before halftime halted a potential Falcon scoring drive, and gave the Green Knights possession with under two minutes to play looking to break a 14-14 tie.

However, Shane Wittman intercepted Pen Argyl quarterback Logan Ruppert's pass on the next play from scrimmage, and took it back 53 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. That's the spark Salisbury needed, as the Falcons added two more touchdowns in the second half to down the Green Knights, 34-21 on Friday night at Salisbury High School.

"It was a big momentum switch," Wittman said. "I knew it was going to be a hard thing to overturn. Everything that happened, I didn't hang my head. We're always picking up each other, and helping with whatever we could do."

The Falcons improved to 3-2 on the season, and have won their past three games. It's the first time any Falcon team under Cerco won three games in a single season, and the team's confidence is growing by the week.

"It's great to get three in a row," Weber said. "We're building a lot of confidence as a team. We've reached that level where we can compete with anybody."

Coming off a four-touchdown performance against Bangor, Weber's impressive stretch continued against the Green Knights. He finished 10-of-15 for 147 yards and two touchdowns, both the Mason Donaldson.

His second score was one of the more crucial plays of the game. Weber delivered when it mattered most.

After Ruppert's second touchdown throw that brought Pen Argyl to within 28-21 early in the fourth quarter, the Falcons were faced with a fourth-and-six from the Green Knight's 32. It was both Weber's legs and arm that created a 32-yard touchdown to Donaldson to give the Falcons a 34-21 with just under nine minutes to play.

"The pocket is going to collapse sometimes, so we have to be ready for it," Weber said. "The pocket collapsed and I ran out. Mason did a great job. Instead of blocking, he released and he was wide open. That's just something we do often, so we're ready for it.

"I felt confident. I watched a lot of film, so I knew what they were going to do, and what they were going to show us."

Weber's first score came just 2:51 into the game when he hooked up with Donaldson on a 1-yard strike to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead. The Green Knights tied it up on the next drive on a 40-yard scamper from Ruppert, who led everyone with 155 yards on the ground.

Devin Irwin, who led the Falcons with 76 rushing yards, exploded for a 61-yard touchdown around the left edge that put Salisbury back in front midway through the first quarter. But the Green Knights, which ran 23 of the game's 29 plays from scrimmage in the second quarter, tied it back up with 2:14 remaining in the half.

"We had a few turnovers that were silly, but our running game was on tonight," Weber said. "Our running backs did a hell of a job-Shane [Wittman], Nick [Sikora], Teddy [Denver], Devin [Irwin], they all did great. They all busted a few, and they played great."

Following Wittman's interception return for a touchdown just before halftime, he capped the Falcons' 14-play opening drive of the second half with a 5-yard score around the right corner. That call was on a fourth-and-goal from the Green Knight's 5-yard line, and the touchdown gave Salisbury a 28-14 lead.

"It was supposed to be up the middle toward the right side," Wittman said, "but once I realized there was no one there, I just bounced it outside. I didn't want to risk it."

Donaldson (72 receiving yards) has caught five of Weber's 10 touchdown throws through five games. Wittman added 75 yards on the ground on nine carries.

James Klinger caught five balls for 61 yards for the Green Knights.

The Falcons host Northwestern, the lone unbeaten team in the Colonial League, on Friday night at 7 p.m.
