EHS soccer teams heat up as postseason nears

It's been a nice week for both the boys and girls soccer teams at Emmaus.

The boys continued their roll and clinched the Skyline Division title in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference with a 2-0 win over Nazareth, upping their record to 13-0-1. Meanwhile, the girls picked up the big win they needed, blanking Whitehall 1-0 and gaining some revenge against the Lady Zephyrs for last season's first-round game in districts.

Parker Landis and John Fritz both scored against Nazareth and goalie Ethan Lang stopped all five shots that his team allowed to notch the team's tenth shutout of the season and their eighth in a row.

The Hornets have allowed just four goals all season and have outscored their opponents 43-4 this season.

Emmaus has four regular season games left, with just one of them being at home. The biggest of the four is a rematch with Parkland this Friday.

The first game against Parkland ended with Emmaus gaining a 1-0 win in a hard-fought game that featured hard play, bad calls against both teams and some late game fog just to make it interesting. The record of the remaining teams on the schedule (Northampton, Central Catholic, Parkland and Whitehall) comes out to a 25-25-1 mark overall and 20-22-1 in the EPC.

Meanwhile, the girls picked up a big 1-0 win over Whitehall that helped to get some revenge for the Lady Zephyrs beating the Hornets in both the regular season and the first round of the district playoffs last season. Coach Rob Rooney thought both losses were embarrassing and believes that his team was looking to prove they were better than they showed in those games.

"I think it was huge," said Rooney. "We were, all of us, the players, myself, everyone on our staff, we were embarrassed by the result that night and we talked about taking our opportunity to show people that's not who we are.

"We're not that team that lost 5-0 in the opening round of the district playoffs last year; I absolutely believe it was on their mind."

Rooney made a change in goal recently, inserting freshman Jess Harnett, who has been outstanding, especially in the win over Whitehall.

"I thought Jess Harnett was stunning," said Rooney. "She's a freshman who started the year on our junior varsity team.

"Our goalkeeping situation is an open competition, the same as it is with every player on the field, and Jess has been the best performer in training and in games in the last couple of weeks. To show poise and confidence in a game this big against a rival of this magnitude was huge. I couldn't be prouder of her or happier for her."

Rooney had hoped to build on that win, but unfortunately, the girls soccer roller coaster has continued and they have lost to both Central Catholic and Nazareth since downing Whitehall. The ups and downs leave them at 6-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the EPC.

Eight teams make the EPC playoffs and right now, the Lady Hornets are seventh overall. Emmaus has four games remaining, all with division foes, including Northampton, Parkland, Whitehall and Central Catholic. Those four teams have a combined record of 30-13-1 in the EPC and Emmaus is 2-2 against those teams this season.
