Boys soccer avenges loss to Northwestern

When Salisbury visited Northwestern two weeks ago, the Falcons scored in the opening two minutes. The Tigers, however, responded with two consecutive goals secure the win.

With the rematch set for last week, there was a little bit of déjà vu evident from the Falcons' side.

It may not have been as quick of a score, but a goal by Ethan Heydt in the opening six minutes gave the Falcons another early lead. They wouldn't squander the advantage this time around though.

The Falcons erased a 1-1 tie midway through the first half with Heydt's second score. Salisbury (10-2-1 overall; 4-2-1 in Colonial League) added two more in the second half to down Northwestern (8-2 overall; 7-1 in Colonial League), 4-1, last Thursday night at Salisbury High School.

"After them beating us and then our tough loss to Saucon a couple of days ago, coming back like this is the real turnaround to our season," Heydt said. "I think from here we can continue to play well, and then we can get a spot in leagues."

The game counted as a nonleague victory for the Falcons, who currently sit in sixth place through seven conference games. The Falcons downed Nazareth in another nonleague game on Saturday, 2-1.

"I think we were just kind of angry with the last two losses we've had," Heydt said. "I think we just wanted to get revenge."

After Keegan Coffield tied the game at a goal apiece following JD Haaf's free kick from 30 yards out, the Falcons wasted little time in retaking the lead.

It came from a familiar face, too.

Just 56 seconds after Northwestern's equalizer, Heydt collected the ball in front of the Tigers' goal on a cross from Danny Walters. Seconds later, he fired a shot into the left side of the net with 20:54 remaining in the half that put the Falcons up for good.

Ben Heydt placed a perfect pass through the Tigers' defense that found his brother, Ethan Heydt, for the opening tally.

"I saw Danny going down the line, and I knew he was going to get a cross out of it so I stayed up top," Ethan Heydt said of the go-ahead score. "The ball came to me, I took a touch, and I just passed it into the corner.

"Once I scored that second goal, everything just went our way," Ethan Heydt said. "The ball was in their half the entire time. We just wanted to keep scoring."

Connor Wagner, who missed the previous meeting with an injury, returned to action three days earlier against Saucon Valley. When he had the opportunity to take on one of the Falcons' more heated rivals in Northwestern, his impact on the offensive end was felt on a number of occasions.

Given room in the Tiger territory, Wagner ripped a strike from nearly 30 yards out that found the back of the goal for a 3-1 Falcon lead with 24:17 to play.

"There was one person back, and I definitely thought I could take him," Wagner said. "I cut through, I cut again, and then I took a deep shot hoping to put it into the corner. It took a lucky bounce and went into the goal."

James Hadinger added a goal with 14:01 to play that all but ended any hopes the Tigers had.

Tyler Keller recorded five saves in goal for the Falcons, who outshot Northwestern 11-6. Kyle Bellhorn stopped seven Falcon shots.

"The communication was huge when it came to this game," Wagner said. "Everybody played as a team today. It was a great game overall, and definitely our best game."

Results from Tuesday's game against Palmerton were not available at time of press. Salisbury travels to Moravian Academy on Thursday for a 4 p.m. game.
