'Billboard Sitters' go for the bucks at Bucks
Lehigh Valley-based film-maker Zeke Zelker takes his production, "The WTYT 960 Billboard Sitters!," to Bucks County Playhouse, 70 S. Main St., New Hope, where it runs 2 and 7 p.m. Oct. 8 - 11.
Zelker debuted a version of the play Nov. 7, 2013, at the State Theatre Center for the Arts, Easton.
Zelker, a 1988 Emmaus High School graduate, has been a film-maker since 1996. His films have been presented at the Sundance Film Festival and his feature film, "InSearchOf," is said to be the seventh most viewed film on Hulu.
"The WTYT 960 Billboard Sitters!" was inspired by Zelker's memories of the real-life 1982 WSAN-AM Lehigh Valley billboard sitting contest.
Zelker remained fascinated by his memories of contestants living atop a billboard visible from Route 22 near MacArthur Road in Whitehall Township. The contest hopefuls were provided with tents and sleeping bags and stayed there for almost nine months. The winner would receive a new mobile home.
As in the actual event, Zelker's four billboard sitters vie for a mobile home. However, his "contestants" also have the chance to win $96,000.
"I wrote the play as a comedy but also as a study in the things people will do and do to each other as they try to survive," says Zelker. "The play makes you think about the whole idea of publicity, celebrity and what the reality is versus the perception."
Zelker allows the audience to influence the story. With a social media app, the audience can interact with the characters and plot and potentially affect the outcome of the play.
"The way that people can engage with the show is really unique," says Zelker. "It's like a jazz piece in that it evolves as it plays."
After the Bucks run, Zelker plans to take the play to New York City and beyond.
"I love to entertain people," he says. "I want to make people think, to laugh. I love to tell stories, regardless of the medium. Above all, I'm a storyteller."
