Slaters shut out Tigers in field hockey

For nearly the entire first half, Northwestern and Bangor played to a scoreless game Saturday on the Lady Tigers' home turf.

But it was a Slater goal in the final minutes of the opening half that not only gave Bangor the first score, it changed the complexion of the game. After Abbi Chesney's shot hit the side bar and bounced passed Northwestern goalkeeper Laura Kotula with 1:42 remaining in the half, the Slaters added two scores in the final 30 minutes to down the Lady Tigers, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern High School.

It was the type of gut-wrenching tally that the Lady Tigers (3-6 in Colonial League) could not recover from.

"We have some communication issues," head coach Lissa Opolsky said. "No one is used to talking, or being loud and telling people what to do. Being young, that doesn't help. Once we figure that out, I think we'll be more successful deep in our circle."

Bangor (3-6 in Colonial League) held possession for much of play in the first half, and the same was evident for the opening minutes of the second. But a Lady Tiger timeout just 6:54 into second-half play seemed to change that scenario.

Courtney Page came up with the Lady Tigers' best chance on goal nearly four minutes later, but her shot was right at Bangor's goalkpeer.

However, while the Lady Tigers were able to tally a couple of shots on goal after the timeout, generating opportunities around the cage were a problem all afternoon.

The Slaters finished the game with a 13-2 advantage in shots.

"I had them kind of calm down and figure some things out," Opolsky said of the timeout. "Since we're so young, it's more of a mental than a physical game for us a lot of the time.

"I think we get really excited when we win the ball, and we like to use our speed to our advantage. But at the same time, we are still figuring out when to play small and keep possession of the ball, and when to break away and play offense."

Nearly six minutes after Page's shot, the Slaters responded with another goal of their own. Emme Lentine's pass deep in Northwestern territory found Marcielena Kotretsos, who redirected the pass into the cage for a 2-0 lead. Not even six minutes later, Julia Kiss' score made it a 3-0 game on Kotretsos' assist.

"They definitely had good points about what they did today," Opolsky. "We worked on some things at practice yesterday that they executed. It seemed like when we broke down, we broke down hard. And that resulted in goals."
