Salisbury prepares for PA's single-wing

After hitting the road for three of their first four games of 2014, Salisbury will be back in the confines of their own place in Week 5 of the Colonial League football schedule.

The Falcons return home riding a two-game win streak, and will look to make it three in a row against winless Pen Argyl on Friday night. But while the Green Knights, have yet to get into the win column this season, records might as well be thrown out heading into this matchup.

The Green Knights may have been faced with the toughest first four weeks of any Colonial League team. Their four losses (Northern Lehigh 21-14, Palmerton 21-19, Northwestern 45-6 and Southern Lehigh 41-18) came against teams that are a combined 13-3 thus far, including unbeaten Northwestern atop the West Division.

Despite that 0-4 record coming into Salisbury, the Falcons understand Pen Argyl is a much better team than that number may show.

"They've been in every game that they've played," head coach Andy Cerco said. "They're a good team. They have a strong tradition up there that was built over the years. Looking at the film, they play a good style of football."

The Green Knights' offense begins with sophomore quarterback Logan Ruppert, a gifted passer and runner in Pen Argyl's spread offense.

Through four games, Ruppert has thrown for seven touchdowns, including two on Friday against Southern Lehigh. He was also the Knights' top rusher last week, running 22 times for 106 yards.

"They want the ball in his hands," Cerco said. "They run a lot of quarterback sweep. We talked to our players [Monday] about certain formations, and ones that appear more often than others. He's definitely a good player."

Along with Ruppert, senior running back Ryan Silvius figures to carry the ball at times for the Green Knights. While he only rushed five times for 12 yards against the Spartans, no other Pen Argyl player carried the ball more than once.

"It's kind of a spread concept, but not completely a zone read package," Cerco said. "Their quarterback is a very good player, and he does a nice job. They have some bigger offensive linemen. Any time we face a bigger offensive line, it's always challenging for us."

Silvius and sophomore running back Alex Heisler are used in the Green Knights' passing attack. Junior wide receiver James Klinger and senior tight end Alex Bartleson are also a couple of Ruppert's top targets in the passing game.

The Falcons' 2-2 record gives them a .500 record at this point in the season for the first time under Cerco.

"They're anxious to continue doing well," Cerco said. "They're excited about where we are going, and how we are playing.

"Today [Monday] and yesterday [Sunday] we met for film, and it's just business for them. They are a focused group on what we need to accomplish."

Friday will be "Shirt Off The Back Night". Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Salisbury High School.
