Winless Wilson visits Tiger Stadium on Friday
Coming into Friday night's game at Northwestern, the Wilson Warriors will be looking to snap a 13 game losing skid. The 2013 season was the first winless season for Wilson and they hope that it marked rock bottom of their descent from their undefeated championship season of 2009, which capped a run of four Colonial League titles in four seasons.
Matt Senneca took over as the coach of the Warriors during the offseason and changed both the offensive and defensive schemes, but so far, the results have been the same, with Wilson off to an 0-3 start.
Last week was their best showing of the season when they dropped a 20-15 decision to Northern Lehigh, playing in the same driving rain that Northwestern faced in their game at Pen Argyl. After being outscored 61-20 in their first two games, the Warriors held a 15-8 half-time lead and put together a 14-play drive late in the game, but turned the ball over on downs at the Northern Lehigh 30-yard line with just over two-minutes left to play.
Like the Warriors, junior quarterback Nick Maston has been up and down. In week one, he was intercepted four times, but then returned to throw for 151 yards against Southern Lehigh the following week. Last week, Senneca kept the passing game simple because of the wet conditions and Maston finished 10-for-15 and threw for 63 yards.
Senior running back Nick Labatch is the main threat on the ground and is averaging 4.4 yards per carry this season with a total of 346 yards rushing in three games.
"They're tough kids, they're big kids," said Snyder. "Their lines, both offense and defense, are probably the biggest that we've faced this season, so that's going to be a challenge. Labatch carried the ball 35 times last week and was over 190 yards and he's a workhorse, so we'll have to prepare for him, because we know that's what they like to do and he's a tough kid."
Northwestern stayed as close to its game plan as possible considering the rain, but quarterback Frank Dangello struggled to throw the wet, heavy ball deep and was intercepted three times on the day. He did throw for three touchdowns though and finished with 100 yards passing on the day.
The first-team defense allowed its first points of the season at Pen Argyl, but the Tigers have outscored opponents 118-12 through the first three games of the season. Dangello and Taylor Breininger both came up with key interceptions against the Knights, who continued to stuff the run, allowing just one yard of rushing in the 45-6 win at Pen Argyl.
Special teams play is becoming a bigger and bigger storyline for the Tigers, who blocked a punt last week. Kicker Brandon Miller was perfect on six extra point attempts and also nailed a 40-yard field goal with plenty of room to spare. Miller's kick was especially effective considering the slick field and wet ball.
"We pride ourselves on being physical and we've been able to stay healthy even through that rainy game," said Snyder. "The turf at Pen Argyl was in really good condition and there wasn't a lot of slipping and sliding and that helped as far as avoiding injuries."
The biggest issue this week may be keeping the players from looking ahead to their meeting with undefeated Saucon Valley next week. The Panthers edged Southern Lehigh 30-27 last week to put them at 3-0. They also have wins over Salisbury and Northern Lehigh.
"Our guys are pretty narrow-minded as far as the schedule," said Snyder. "We just focus on improving week in and week out. We haven't played Saucon Valley in two years, so we'll have some work to do as far as preparing for them, but that's for next week. Right now, we're just enjoying each week as it comes."
