Nature Center art show winners are chosen

The recent art show at the Lehigh Gap Nature Center was juried by Anita Collins and Kay Stauffer.

Winners in the show were announced during a reception.

Termed a "celebration of art in nature," the show drew 30 entries that gave local people a chance to demonstrate their talent.

"There is so much talent in the area," said Lee Sivak, of Slatington.

Sivak did not know it but she would shortly be named the winner of the People's Choice Award.

Her painting, of the living roof on the springhouse at the end of the Osprey House, would be donated to Center Director Dan Kunkle.

She decided to donate her painting because she was so inspired and appreciative of the work put into planting the roof and because the Nature Center also helped her plan her garden.

Sivak's "Living Roof" and a "Jumping Frog" were running neck-and-neck till the end, said Collins. The ballot box was stuffed.

Collins handed Sivak her award, a zucchini, which drew some shocked looks until Collins said there was also a gift certificate to an art store of Sivak's choice.

Sivak explained she took a photo of the springhouse and did the painting over the winter. She drove to the Nature Center several times as the photo did not have the detail she wanted and time had to be found between babysitting her granddaughter.

Sivak, who began painting two years ago, works with watercolor.

She is part of the education team at the center and made many friends there after retiring from her teaching job.

"They do an awesome job," she said of the volunteers.

Winners receiving ribbons were John Balogh, with his turned wood "Jumping Frog" and Mary Coover, with a porcelain "Frog Pond Mirror."
