Haaf's header beats Salisbury
Tuesday's conference matchup between Salisbury and Northwestern featured the lone two remaining unbeaten boys soccer teams in the Colonial League.
And for much of the game, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie, and showed why they were at the top of the league standings.
But one team rose as the premier squad in the Colonial League. It turned out to be the Tigers in front of their home crowd.
Junior forward JD Haaf's headed in the game-winning goal on a pass from junior defender Brett Scott that sent the Tigers to 5-0 in conference play with a 2-1 victory at Northwestern Lehigh Middle School Field. The Falcons dropped to 3-1-1 in league play.
"First we started with Saucon and we took care of them," Haaf said. "Then we came here and took care of Salisbury. We look forward to playing them again."
The Tigers found themselves down a goal just as quickly as the opening whistle sounded. Salisbury's Danny Walters's opened the game with a score after just 1:08 of play, testing the Tigers' inexperience and youth from the get-go.
While it took some time for the offense to start gelling, it would pass that test with flying colors.
Sophomore midfielder Thomas Creighton positioned a perfect corner kick into the Falcons' penalty box, and sophomore defender Jonathan Blaine was there for the header that knotted the game at a goal apiece with 16:50 to play.
"It shows how much depth our team really has, and that we can come back and do that," Haaf said. "Our defense really stepped up and took care of business."
That momentum transitioned into the second half, and the Tigers dominated possession for much of the early going. It wasn't until late in the final 40 minutes that one of the their opportunities would end up in a tally.
Haaf's score with 12:30 to play was the last of the Tigers' eight shots on goal in that second half. It turned out to be the game-winner, despite the fact that the Falcons had two solid shots on goal in the final six minutes.
"I didn't really know that I was going to get a head on it," Haaf said. "I just kept my arms up and kept fighting. I didn't think it was going to go in, but I turned around and it was rolling in."
Walters fired a shot from the right side of the Tigers' goal with just under six to play, but Kyle Bellhorn was there for a crucial save. A little more than a minute later, Zach Adams had a clear header on goal sail a few feet wide right.
