Taylor Hauck of Kutztown was named to the dean's list at the University of New Haven, West Haven, Conn., for the spring 2014 semester.

Rider Univ.

Area student

in opera program

Nicholas Roehler of Allentown participated in the CoOPERAtive Program, an opera training program at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, N.J., in July.

Roehler was selected from several who applied to be a pianist intern through the Operatic Coach/Accompanying Program at CoOPERAtive.

The program helps young singers and pianists prepare for acceptance into an advanced young artist or summer apprentice program.

The three-week intensive program includes private coaching focusing on operatic style, performance techniques and collaboration on relevant repertoire with young professional singers.

Roehler's schedule will include private coaching sessions, classes and master classes with some of the country's leading conductors, stage directors and pianists.

The CoOPERAtive Program is directed by Westminster Choir College faculty members Laura Brooks Rice and Christopher Arneson.

George Mason

Local student

awarded honors

Alexis Gawelko, a student at Northwestern Lehigh High School, was selected to represent Pennsylvania as a national youth delegate to the 2014 Washington Youth Summit on the environment at George Mason University, Fairfax, Va.

She joined a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.

Gawelko was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

Christopher Kunkle of Schnecksville, earned a Bachelor of Science and Master's degree in architecture from Roger Williams University, Bristol, R.I.

Austin King of Kempton, a member of the class of 2016, was named to the dean's list at Providence College, Providence, R.I., for the spring 2014 semester.

To qualify for the dean's list, students must achieve at least a 3.55 grade-point average with a minimum of 12 credits.
