SHS tennis team endures learning curve
The Salisbury girls tennis team may be 2-12 on the season with one win in the Colonial League, but there's more behind their run thus far in 2014.
The Lady Falcons could very well be hovering around the .500 mark in conference play had a few matches gone in their favor.
On four different occasions, the Lady Falcons lost matches by a 3-2 final score. Most recently it was a 3-2 defeat to Wilson exactly one week ago. Since then, the Lady Falcons dropped back-to-back matches to two of the Colonial League's top squads: Moravian Academy (5-0) and Palisades (4-1).
Saturday's match against Pen Argyl was suspended due to weather.
"I kind of get tired of hearing 3-2 scores, but it's what we are and where we are," head coach Rob Benson said. "We could very easily have four more wins. But it doesn't happen, and we're learning the game and what happens in tight matches.
"They [Palisades] just barely lost to Moravian, 3-2. That's how good they are."
For a team that possesses two sophomores and a freshman in the three singles positions, there figures to be a number of road bumps along the way.
But while Leandra Roelker (No. 1 singles) and Claudia Crouthamel (No. 2 singles) have seen their opponents' top two players each game, the two have made tremendous strides in their sophomore campaigns.
"She is playing top-ranked players," Benson said of Roelker. "Her mental attitude is so much stronger this year than last year.
"The biggest improvement this year so far has been Claudia. She came on at the Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg) match, and she showed guts, guts and more guts. Since then she has gotten some confidence and a lot more consistent."
At one point in the season, Benson moved No. 3 singles player freshman Lil Crouthamel into doubles action, while senior Laura Albright was plugged into the No. 3 singles position.
After playing much of the season in both doubles matches, as well as all of last season with senior Hannah Kahn, Albright earned wins against Wilson and Pen Argyl's No. 3 player.
"Lil is still a freshman, and she is still learning all of the ins and outs," Benson said.
Regardless of the two wins, Benson has been pleased with the effort and continued improvement across his lineup each week.
The Lady Falcons travel to Southern Lehigh on Friday to take on the Colonial League's top team at 4 p.m. They face Allen the next day at Oakmont Tennis Club at 10 a.m.
Results from Tuesday's match at Wilson were not available at time of press.
"We just have a strong league," Benson said. "I didn't know it was this strong. Southern Lehigh is at the top of the pack, and then comes Moravian, but Notre Dame (Green Pond) and Palisades are right on their heels."
