LOWER MACUNGIE COLUMN Hawaiian Luau at LMCC Oct. 4

There will be a Father-Daughter Dance Hawaiian Luau for girls enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Lower Macungie Community Center. To register, call or go to the community center 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or call 610-966-6924.

There will be a free document shredding event 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 4 at the municipal building parking lot. The event is sponsored by State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, and Lower Macungie.

The Lower Macungie Township Historical Society will celebrate its 25th anniversary 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 at the community center. There will be exhibits, demonstrations, children's activities, gifts, antique appraisals, food and more. Tom Hall Auctioneers will offer antique appraisals. Curbside collection of yard waste will take place Oct. 13 through 17. Containers/bundles should be placed separately at the curb on the regular collection day. Grass clippings are not included. A maximum of four bundles or containers per household will be collected. For more information, visit www.lowermac.org.

There will be a Mother-Son Halloween Dance for boys in kindergarten through sixth grade 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17 at the community center. There will be music by a local DJ as well as drinks, snacks, spooky games and contests. There also will be a costume contest and mummy wrap. To register, call or go to the community center.

Crafters are needed for Concordia Lutheran Church's third annual holiday bazaar 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 25. For more information, call Corin at 610-530-9588.

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Alburtis will hold a fall and holiday bazaar 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 18. There will be crafts, a white elephant, Chinese auction, bake sale and food.

The Lower Macungie Firefighters' Ladies Auxiliary will hold its annual craft fair 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 1, 958 Brookside Road. Spaces for crafters are still available. For information call 484-239-3945.

There will be a breakfast with everyone's favorite bear and bouncing tiger for infants through age seven with an adult 9 to 10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 at the community center. Ticket price will include breakfast, photo opportunities and a prize. Registration is limited to 100 people.

The board of commissioners and staff are holding the ninth annual troop support program to collect donated items to send to township residents in the armed services who will not be home for the holidays. To register a loved one in the holiday program, call the community center. Donations of food, toiletry items, batteries, magazines and phone cards will be accepted at the community center 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday through Nov. 28. A list of acceptable donations is available at the community center. Over the last eight years, 720 boxes of donated items were sent to 93 soldiers.

The township is also collecting old cell phones to be recycled in exchange for prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops stationed overseas. The community center is an official drop-off point for "Cell Phones for Soldiers" until Oct. 31.

The annual craft/vendor fair will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at the community center. Vendor spaces are sold out.

The Lower Macungie Senior Citizens Club meets noon Oct. 7 and 21 at the community center. After a business meeting, members play bingo or card games. On Oct. 21 the games are followed by special entertainment.

The Lower Macungie Township Community Center offers a number of activities including Walkercise, yoga, pilates and Zumba. Fall classes include Kindermusik, kids' art and cooking classes, Mommy/Daddy and Me Soccer and Toddlers and Tutus.

Family open gym time is 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays for ages infant through 10 years with a parent. Proof of residency is required.

Yard waste site hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The site is closed Tuesday and Thursday. Be prepared to show your photo I.D. as proof of residency.

Throughout the month of September, Lower Macungie Library will feature the paintings of Elizabeth Allender.

September is library card sign-up month. Libraries provide books and databases, CDs and DVDs and access to many community resources. Check it out today.

The library book club will meet 10:30 a.m. Oct. 1 to discuss "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson at the community center. The book for Nov. 5 will be "The Madonnas of Leningrad" by Debra Dean.

The next board game event will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 20. Light refreshments will be provided. Advance registration is requested.

The Pa. Department of Health will offer free blood pressure screenings 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the library. Call the Department of Health at 610-821-6770 for questions or to make an appointment.

Learn how to become an advocate. Margie Stern from PA Forward and Susan Nenstiel from the library will give a presentation on being an advocate and taking action 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 20.

The next meeting of the Friends of the Lower Macungie Library will be 9 a.m. Sept. 20 in the library. Book donations are being accepted through Oct. 18 for the November book sale. No magazines, Reader's Digest books or textbooks will be accepted. Sorting of the books occurs 8:30 a.m. every Thursday morning into the fall. Help is always welcome.
