Falcons get season's first win
Salisbury hadn't lived up to its motto of "Finish" in its first two games.
On Friday night against Notre Dame-Green Pond, they did.
The Falcons (1-2) rushed for 297 yards, 112 of which came from running back Shane Wittman, as the team earned its first win of the season, 27-13, against the Crusaders (0-3) at Notre Dame High School in Green Pond.
After holding a late lead against Saucon Valley in the season opener, and just a week removed from sticking with Palisades for the entire first half, the Falcons put together a complete game for the first time all season.
"Saucon was a tough one because we were fighting, we came back, and we just had to finish," Alex Kubinec said. "We just couldn't finish. This week we played all four quarters and got it done."
"It feels great to win," Wittman said. "We had two tough games, and we didn't finish. This game we played complete. It feels good to finally finish a game and win."
The Falcons built a 20-0 lead early in the fourth quarter after Kubinec scored his second 1-yard touchdown of the game.
Kubinec, who finished with 76 rushing yards on 20 carries, was one of four Falcons to rush for over 40 yards. Devin Irwin ran for 45 yards on eight carries. Teddy Denver recorded 43 on just four carries.
Wittman's 100-yard day on the ground was the first for a Falcon this year. Six different ball carriers touched the ball.
"We actually thought it was just going to be two backs," Wittman said. "Once everyone started getting reps, we realized what we could do with the four running backs. We just rotate, and once everyone comes in everyone is fresh."
"We want to get everybody the ball," Kubinec said. "We have a rotation, so one person comes in and they're fresh, compared to other teams where they have one running back and they're not fresh every series."
After the Crusaders got on the scoreboard with 4:51 to play on a 25-yard strike from Drew Harris to Mike Peapos, the Falcons put to rest any rumblings of a potential comeback on their next play from scrimmage.
Tevon Weber was held to 27 passing yards through three quarters, but his 65-yard touchdown pass to Wittman put him near 100 and gave the Falcons a comfortable 27-7 lead in the final minutes.
Wittman's 95 receiving yards also led the team and brought his game total to 207 combined yards.
"I just never let my hopes get down because I always know what we're capable of," Wittman said. "We have all of the skills to do it."
The Crusaders added a score a little more than a minute later, but the Falcons were able to run out the clock on their next possession.
Kubinec's first score came midway through the opening quarter. His 1-yard plunge capped off a five-play drive that gave Salisbury a 7-0 lead.
That lead would hold as halftime hit after a Falcon field goal attempt before the break was just wide.
Wittman capped a 10-play drive late in the third with his 11-yard rushing touchdown around the right side to give the Falcons a 13-0 advantage.
"We were just focused on finishing," Kubinec said. "We were saying the whole time on the sideline that the game is not over. Once it hits zero, then we can celebrate."
The Falcon defense also rose to the occasion. The Crusaders managed a combined 64 yards in the first half, and Salisbury intercepted two passes in the game. The Crusaders totaled 166 total yards.
"It feels great knowing we didn't let up a whole lot of yards," Wittman said. "We shut them out for almost the whole game."
