The 162nd Great Allentown Fair kicked off with a new Preview Night gate admission campaign to assist the Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania. Fairgoers age 13 and over were charged $3 to enter, or come in "with a buck and a can." Thousands of fairgoers elected to do just that, dropping acceptable donation items into overflowing baskets at the fair entrances and then paying the $1 fair admission. The result: 7,667 pounds of food and sundry items was collected. Fair admission during the week went directly to the nonprofit agricultural mission of the fair operator, the Lehigh County Agricultural Society. Said Society Spokesperson Bonnie Brosious, "The society is grateful for the astounding generosity of our fairgoers to help fight hunger as they supported our mission to reward the achievements of farmers, gardeners and homemakers." Plans are already underway to set a new poundage record next year.
