Girls volleyball takes second place at Cardinal Inivitational
The Northwestern girls volleyball team is entering its third year of competition. However, the team is building quite a reputation for strong performances in tournament play.
The Lady Tigers have a championship trophy from the Pine Grove Cardinal Clash from 2012, their first tournament appearance as a varsity program.
The team also owns some hardware from the Courtney Diacont Memorial Tournament at Nazateth High School in 2013.
On Saturday August 30, the Lady Tigers kept streak alive with a second-place finish at the Cardinal Clash at Pine Grove High School.
The day started with a match up against Blue Mountain High School in pool play. The Lady Tigers took the Blue Eagles to the limit with a 27-26 loss in the first game and a 25-15 setback in the second game. That would be the last lost the Lady Tigers would suffer in pool play.
Northwestern went on to sweep Schuylkill Haven, Pine Grove and Pius X. Leading to a 6-2 pool play record and a No. 2 seed in the playoff round.
In the playoffs, the Lady Tigers defeated Northern Lebanon in the quarter finals and powerhouse Nativity in the semifinal. This set up a rematch with Blue Mountain in the final.
The Lady Tigers fell behind early only to fight their way back to a 22-20 lead. But the Blue Eagles gained control of the game late and won the championship match, 25-22.
Excellent team play and great serving were strong point of the Lady Tigers all day long.
The Lady Tigers were led by 13 kills each by Sarah Overstrom and Natcheli Gomes. Sarah Malay had 12 kills. Sarah Malay led the way from the service line with 13 aces and Abigail Monks led the Lady Tigers with four blocks.
