Girls soccer stays undefeated in league play
Victories over Palisades (2-0) and Notre Dame-Green Pond (6-2) put Salisbury at 2-0 after one week of play in the Colonial League girls' soccer season.
Minutes into Monday's league game against Catasauqua, there was little doubt that the Lady Falcons would start the week with another victory and remain unbeaten in conference play.
Forward Mackenzie Groff, who scored four goals against the Rough Riders, tallied a hat trick in the first 14:53 to put the Lady Falcons in front 3-0. Nine different players scored goals as the Lady Falcons (3-0) pushed a 7-1 lead at halftime to a 12-1 victory over the Rough Riders (0-3) at Catasauqua's Thomas Field.
"I don't know that over the past three years if we've ever been 3-0," Groff said. "We're really hoping to be in the league playoffs this year, so 3-0 is definitely going to help us get where we're hoping. It feels great."
Following Groff's third score, head coach Rick Babyak sat his leading goal scorer for the remainder of the half. That gave way for a number of younger players to gain experience for nearly half of the first 40 minutes and nearly the entire second half.
Even though much of the starters were pulled, the offense continued to produce goals at a high rate.
Following a goal from Jade Biviano that got the Rough Riders on the scoreboard with 17:11 to play in the first half, Kyra Bruns floated a deep shot over Catasauqua's goalkeeper less than a minute later to make it a 5-1 game.
Caitlin Hoeing and Emily Batman added goals in the final three minutes of the first half.
"It definitely boosts our spirits, and gives us the confidence that we can score," Groff said. "We definitely let our guard down a little bit. In the past couple of games, we've scored first and then someone scores on us. But hopefully we usually come back and score again."
The starters took the field to open the second half, but it wouldn't last long.
Just 17 seconds following the second half whistle, Groff scored her fourth goal of the game and her 12th of the season to push the Falcons' advantage to 8-1.
Groff was subbed out following that score, giving way for a number of other players up front on the offensive attack.
"It's a good thing that we can have younger players step up and make things happen," Groff said. "It gives our coaches confidence for the future that those players will be able to step up in the upcoming years and help them out."
All 30 players that suited up, including JV players, saw varsity time on the field against the Rough Riders.
Vivian Rogers, Sarah Reilly, Kyra Lagunilla, Briana Zielinski and Alexandra Yankee also scored goals.
"We are a very close-knit team," Groff said. "We feel comfortable playing with each other. Everyone gets along, and we just like playing with each other."
