Valley race route ready for Via Marathon
The Lehigh Valley Health Network Via Marathon course is divided into five legs.
The race starts at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 7, Lehigh Valley Hospital, passes the Lil Le Hi Trout Hatchery and goes through Lehigh Parkway. Opening ceremonies are at 6:40 a.m.
The Salisbury Township portion is in the first leg, which is 6.2 miles, starts at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest Boulevard and I-78, and continues to the Parkettes, Martin Luther King Drive and South Fourth Street.
At Mile 7, runners enter the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.
Mile 12 is in Bethlehem, with a run through the 18th Century Industrial Quarter.
Canal locks, a boat launch and several parks make up the run to Easton.
Mile 25 is the confluence of the Lehigh and Delaware rivers. From there, it's one mile to the finish line.
Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer, Runner's World Magazine, designed the Via Marathon course, which is a Boston Marathon Qualifier.
The Marathon, Team Relay and Half-Marathon are sold out. The marathon is capped at 2,500 runners. The average runner's time last year was 3:57 min.
Registration does not close for the 5 K Run, 7:30 a.m.; Via Walk, 9 a.m., and Kids Race, 10:30 a.m., all held Sept. 6, ArtsQuest Center, Steel Stacks, 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem.
The Salisbury Township Police Department is ready to handle the Lehigh Valley Health Network Via Marathon.
Salisbury Township Chief of Police Allen W. Stiles briefed township commissioners about the Via Marathon at the Aug. 14 meeting.
Stiles said the main traffic control crossing is at Cedar Crest Boulevard and Fish Hatchery Road. The marathon only interrupts traffic in the township for about 15 min.
"Last year, we had some problems with church-goers who weren't able to get to church on time," Stiles said.
Marathon registration closed Aug. 10. One of the last persons to register for the marathon is from Norway.
"It's going very smoothly and gets better each year," Stiles said.
