UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN Hivel Und Dahl welcomes artist to meeting

September is a busy month for local historical societies.

The quarterly meeting of the Hivel Und Dahl Preservation Society will be 7 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Upper Milford Township building, 5671 Chestnut St., Zionsville. After a short business meeting, Joan Biehl will paint a picture of the Schubert-Graber log cabin while she tells attendees about growing up on a farm in Berks County. The painting will be raffled and the winner selected at the Nov. 25 meeting. Refreshments will be served. Guests are always welcome. For more information, visit the website at hivelunddahl.com.

On Oct. 12, Hivel Und Dahl will sponsor a bus tour of seven log homes in the northern portion of the Lehigh County Log Cabin Trail. The tour leaves from the Shelter House on South 4th Street, Emmaus, 1 p.m. There is a charge which includes the bus and refreshments. If interested, contact Bruce Mordaunt at 610-395-9836.

The Upper Milford Historical Society's Sept. 25 meeting will include a group discussion about area schools of the past. Also at the 7 p.m. meeting, the society will present its quilt to the public. This quilt features places and objects representing township history. The project began in June 2013 with eight members. The framed quilt will hang (under glass) in the hallway of the township building outside the general meeting room.

The Vera Cruz Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary is hosting another fall craft and vendor event this year. The Fire Prevention Open House and Craft Show will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27 at Citizens Fire Company (Vera Cruz), 4093 Main Road West, Emmaus. There will be 30 crafters and vendors, refreshments and a bake sale, kids' activities and more. Parking and admission is free. The station's website is www.VCFD28.com for more information.

Upper Milford Fire Company, Route 100, Old Zionsville, serves breakfast the first Sunday of every month, 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All you care to eat. There are senior, adult and children's prices. The Emmaus-Upper Milford Joint Environmental Advisory Council will meet 7:30 p.m. in Upper Milford Sept. 23.

Car lovers are sure to enjoy the Founder's Grove Car Cruise noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at St. Peter's Union Church, 7863 St. Peter's Road, Macungie. All vehicles are welcome. There will be great food, a raffle and DJ 'Dr. Don' spinning oldies. Parking is available for a donation of cash and/or a nonperishable food item for a local food pantry.

The following Saturday, Sept. 20, St. Peters will hold an antique tractor and implement collectors' show beginning 10 a.m. Tractor pulls and other tractor activities will be featured.

St. Peter's has helped out the Zionsville Food Pantry as a result of its 'Christmas in July' worship service. Enough cans, boxes and bags of pasta and other food items were collected to fill the back of a Jeep.

Final planning for Lower Milford Township's annual fall festival is now going on. This year's festival will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27 rain or shine, on the township building grounds, 7607 Chestnut Hill Church Road, Coopersburg.

New in September is the Lower Milford Fire Company's first ever "Taco Tuesday!" It will be held 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23. There will be all-you-can-eat, build-your-own tacos and a build-your-own sundae bar. Children under three are free.

The fire company's pork and sauerkraut dinner is back after the summer hiatus, 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

Breakfast on the fourth Sunday of the month is also back starting Sept. 28.

The fire company's spaghetti suppers will not be held regularly, but will be offered occasionally during the winter months. Check the fire company's website for updates.

The Upper Milford Western District Fire Co. #1 Ladies Auxiliary meets 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the firehouse. They are always looking for new members.

Chestnut Hill Church, 6870 Chestnut Hill Church Road, Lower Milford Township, will hold its annual yard/bake sale and electronics recycling program 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct 4. For additional information, go to the website, chestnuthillchurch. org.
