Boys go 2-0 in annual tourney

Perhaps the best formula for any team is that perfect mix of youth and experience that not only bodes well for the present, but forecasts a bright future as well.

Gifted with 15 seniors and a number of underclassmen, the Salisbury boys' soccer team may have something that resembles that coveted balance.

While the team's top returning goal scorers (Connor Wagner and Danny Walters) from last season combined for three goals and six assists in the Salisbury Soccer Falcon Invitational, a number of younger players also paid huge dividends as the Falcons went 2-0 over Friday and Saturday.

The Falcons opened up the tournament with a 9-0 win over Notre Dame (East Stroudsburg) on Friday, and followed that up with an 8-1 victory against Lakeland the following day.

"We look good," said sophomore midfielder James Hadinger, who recorded three goals and an assist in the tournament. "We pretty much manhandled both teams possession-wise. We have depth on the bench that can come in for players, and stay in control of the game."

In their victory over Lakeland in the first game of a quadruple-header on Saturday, the Falcons built a 4-1 lead at intermission before adding three more in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

It was the senior class that got the scoring started, but after a goal by Wagner 12:35 into the game, a number of sophomores and a freshman quickly followed suit.

A little more than six minutes later, senior midfielder Sebastian Valderrama found sophomore midfielder Ethan Heydt, who gave Salisbury a 2-0 lead at the 21:10 mark on the first half. Freshman midfielder Patrick Adams then pushed the Falcons' lead to 3-0, and Hadinger's goal with 4:03 to play in the half made it a quick 4-0 advantage.

"We all have learned so much from the seniors," Hadinger said. "When the seniors go next year, we won't have as much depth on the bench, but we'll have a good starting lineup."

Wagner assisted on the Falcons' first goal of the second half and later punched in his second of the game, while Valderrama fired in his third goal of the tournament for a 7-1 lead. Hadinger scored the final goal for the Falcons.

Six different Falcons scored goals in teh win over Lakeland, including Hadinger (2), Wagner (2), Ethan Heydt (1), Pat Adams (1), Valderrama (1) and Levi Renninger (1).

The only goal the Falcons' defense allowed in both games was a penalty kick late in the first half of Saturday's game against Lakeland.

"I played a little bit of every varsity game last year, and I played all of JV, too," Hadinger said. "I'm getting a lot more comfortable, and I'm getting used to the style and aggressiveness of varsity soccer."

Wagner (3 goals, 3 assists), Hadinger (3 goals, 1 assist), Valderrama (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ethan Heydt (2 goals, 2 assists) led the Falcons over the two-day tournament.

Tyler Keller recorded a total of eight saves in the two games.

Results from the team's Colonial League opener against Palisades on Tuesday were not available at time of press. The Falcons travel to Notre Dame Green-Pond on Thursday. Game time is 4 p.m.
