Kempton student

graduates college

Amanda C. Bittner, Rhoads Road, Kempton, graduated May 17 with a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind. A 2008 Northwestern Lehigh graduate, she doubled majored in mathematics and economics at Susquehanna University, from which she graduated in 2012.

The results of her research thesis are being published in a journal and extension article.

She started her career July 28 as a commodity production/marketing analyst for Informa Economics at the company's headquarters in Memphis, Tenn.

Albright

Students honored,

earn diplomas

Patrick Wise, a sophomore biochemistry major from Kutztown, received the CRC Press freshman chemistry award during Albright College's 2014 honors and awards ceremony May 4 in Reading.

Wise spent the summer tackling an Albright creative research experience project.

ACRE is a multi-disciplinary program that affords undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct research or pursue creative endeavors during the summer break or the three-week January interim. Students work alongside faculty mentors.

Wise's project is "Synthesis of Chiral Aluminum Bis(amidate) Complexes and their Catalytic Activity for Asymmetric Ketone Reduction."

His faculty adviser is assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry Christopher Graves, PH.D.

Many collaborative teams of students and faculty present their research at academic conferences and publish their results in professional journals.

The following students received diplomas after the 2014 spring semester at Albright:

Aaron Bredbenner of New Tripoli, Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry; Ashlee Raub-Rodriguez of Kutztown, with highest honors, Bachelor of Science degree in organizational behavior applied psychology; Kelly Remaley of Germansville, Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, and Lauren Gradwell of Fogelsville, Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

Emily Harakal of Schnecksville, daughter of Andrew M. Harakal and Carol L. Harakal, received a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science from Juniata College, Huntingdon, May 17.

Harakal is a 2010 graduate of Parkland High School.

Taylor Hauck, of Kutztown, was named to the dean's list for the fall 2013 semester at the University of New Haven, West Haven, Conn.

Full-time undergraduate students must have a 3.50 or better cumulative grade-point average for the semester to be eligible for the dean's list.

Sarah Elizabeth Johnson of Kutztown graduated from

Clemson University Dec. 19, 2013, with a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences.

Johnson was among 1,100 students who received degrees from President James F. Barker, who presided over his final graduation ceremony before stepping down after 14 years at the helm of the university.

U. of Scranton

STUDENT INDUCTED INTO HONOR SOCIETY

Katelyn Moyer of Allentown was among the 42 University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national honor society for students in Jesuit colleges and universities, at a ceremony held on campus.

The Scranton chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu was founded in 1943 and is the oldest honor society at the University of Scranton.

Juniors, seniors and graduate students who have distinguished themselves in scholarship, loyalty and service are eligible for membership.

Moyer is a senior majoring in exercise science.

Fort Lewis

Kutztown student

is a cycling success

Zack Noonan of Kutztown was an integral part of Fort Lewis College's recent cycling success.

the college in Durango, Colo., was named the no. 2 USA cycling collegiate division 1 team in the nation.

Noonan raced with the team for the academic year and participated in national championships in track and road.

He was also an individual national champion in the team time trial event.

Additionally, he was named to the collegiate all-academic team for maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average during the spring 2014 semester while suceeding as an athlete.

Noonan's major is engineering.

Lauren Behney from Kempton, studying behavioral health at Alvernia University, Reading, was named a member of Delta Epsilon Sigma Catholic student honor society during fall 2013.

Delta Epsilon Sigma is a national scholastic honor society for students, faculty, and alumni of colleges and universities with a Catholic tradition. Benefits of this honor society include an annual scholarship and fellowship competition, life-long subscription to the "Delta Epsilon Sigma Journal," voting and nomination rites, a national student award for graduating seniors, an annual writing competition, and a distinguished lecturer program.

Hannah Rucker of Allentown was named to the spring 2014 dean's list at Champlain College, Burlington, Vt., for achieving a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Rucker is majoring in digital filmmaking.

Chelsea Barbra Bartholomew of Fogelsville was recognized among 1,800 students from Valdosta State University, Valdosta, Ga., and was named to the spring 2014 dean's list.

Students who achieve a semester grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on nine or more semester hours with an institutional grade-point average of 3.00 or higher are recognized by being placed on the dean's list.

Student earns

service award

Bethany Howatt of Allentown earned an Excellence in Service award from Alvernia's Holleran Center for community engagement for completing at least 100 hours of community service in the last year.

Although students are only required to complete 40 hours of community service over four years, Howatt has gone above and beyond by completing more than 100 hours in just one year while attending the university in reading, berks county.
