EMMAUS COLUMN Farewell to Summer Festival Sept. 13
The Main Street Partners will hold a Farewell to Summer Festival 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Triangle Park and various locations along Main Street. This event includes banana split, cupcake decorating and hotdog eating contests as well as a chili cook off. There is an entry fee for some contests. There will be a Name the Logo contest, kids' activities and more. The event includes a visit by Ronald McDonald and a free concert featuring The New Constitution beginning 5 p.m. on the Triangle. It's bluegrass toe-tapping time in Emmaus Community Park Sept. 27. There will be a concert of Bluegrass Americana music by Scott Marshall and the Hillbilly Souls 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Emmaus Community Park's Arts Pavilion. Food and beverages will be available. Emmaus Main Street Partners will host a beer tent and the Emmaus Special Entertainment Commission will be selling ice cream as a fundraiser. Compost site hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Sept. 24 through Oct. 11. The electronics recycling site is open noon to 6 p.m. the second Monday of the month.

The Church of St. Ann, 415 S. Sixth St., will hold its 32nd annual Fall Fest Sept. 4 through 6. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 4, 5 to 11 p.m. Sept. 5 and 4 to 11 p.m. Sept. 6. This is an Emmaus community event right in your own backyard. There is plenty of parking, a giant tent rain or shine and free admission. The fest features an ethnic kitchen, food stands, midway rides, games of chance and local bands and entertainment every evening. All senior citizens over the age of 55 are invited to the Emmaus Senior Citizens meetings at St. Matthew's E.C. Church, Ridge and Fifth streets. The group meets 1 p.m. Fridays. The Kiwanis Club of Emmaus is holding its first annual Putt-U Mini Golf Tournament, 5:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Putt-U Golf Center, 5201 Pennsylvania 309, Center Valley. All ages are welcome. The cost per golfer includes a round of mini-golf, a hot dog and beverage. The club welcomes sponsors for the event. The proceeds are used to fund the club's programs for children in the community. The Emmaus Rotary Club invites golfers to enter its seventh annual golf tournament Sept. 8 at Brookside Country Club. Registration is 11 a.m. to noon (the driving range, chipping and putting greens are available) and 12:30 p.m. is a shotgun start followed by dinner and awards. There is a cost. It was nice to hear the Emmaus Public Library will continue Community Heroes Day this year. The event was the late Martha Vines' creation. The library will hold the event 6 p.m. Sept. 11. Come out and say thank you to the police and members of the fire department and ambulance corps who serve our community. The event offers an opportunity to examine the emergency vehicles and meet the personnel.

Stars story times for three, four and five year olds will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays starting Sept. 30. Suns story times for two year olds will be 10:30 a.m. Thursdays starting Oct. 2. Reading Adventure for second and third graders) will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays starting Oct. 6. Check the library website for schedules for other programs, most of which begin in October. Register also for the adult book discussion group which meets 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month and begins in October.
The library will offer a brief introduction to genealogy, with a special emphasis on Ancestry.com 7 p.m. Sept. 24.
A new offering at the library is the showing of a classic family movie adventure monthly. The title of the movie will be posted in the library. Another new feature is allowing beverages in the library, provided they are in a closed container. The library will be closed Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 for the Labor Day holiday. If you are interested in local history, the Emmaus Historical Society museum, 563 Chestnut St., is a great place to visit. The museum is open noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The museum will be decorated for Halloween Sept. 13 through Oct. 31. The topic for the group's Sept. 17 meeting which is held 7 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Fifth and Chestnut streets, is "1959 Centennial." Hear about and see memorabilia from the Queen's Ball, the kickoff dinner exhibits and time capsule events.
The Moravian Historical Society recently published the Moravian Walking Tour and Guidebook of the Lehigh Valley. The booklet includes among other information four pages on Emmaus' historical sites. If purchased through the Emmaus Historical Society, a portion of the purchase price benefits the society's capital campaign. Plans for the 1803 House's A Very Merrie Halloween are underway. The event will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 on the grounds of the historical house, 55 S. Keystone Ave. The organizers are still looking for bakers for the baking contest. There are three categories to choose from: apple, pumpkin or Halloween. All entries must be dessert based. There is no entrance fee. Entry forms can be obtained at www1803house.org under A Very Merrie Halloween heading. Deadline for entry forms is Sept. 20.
