Slatington Public Library announces upcoming events

Debra Siglin and Annette Malloy recently presented Slatington Public Library's "Wonderful World of Wildlife" reading program.

The library thanks them and the Lehigh Gap Nature Center for sponsoring this program for another summer of fun.

The state's Department of Health will be having a blood pressure screenings 10 a.m.-noon. on the last Friday of each month.

Stop in and have your blood pressure checked Sept. 26.

Ed Bechtel of Bechtel's Pharmacy will present a lecture on "Pre- Diabetes" 1 p.m. Aug. 27 at the library.

This is the next installment of the diabetes lecture series, "The Sweet Spot." Mr. Bechtel presents a different topic on diabetes the fourth Wednesday of each month.

The remaining topics for the year are: September, exercise; October, overview of diabetes; November, new medications for diabetes and December, traveling with diabetes.

The library is planning its 18th annual Chinese auction for Sept. 23 at the Diamond Fire Company Social Hall, 110 Main St. Walnutport. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

The library needs donations of handcrafted items, gift certificates and gift baskets worth approximately $20. All donations may be brought to the library.

The library is selling three titles, written by William L. Leickel, concerning the history of the Northern Lehigh area.

They are: Slatington Soap Box Derby, History of Movie Theaters in Slatington and Businesses along the Boulevard. These are all available at the library.

The library is raffling off a handmade quilt comprised of "Sunbonnet Sue." Visit the quilt at the library. Tickets are available at the library for the drawing Oct. 19 at the Canal Festival.

The library is selling a 16-inch by 12-inch tote called "Celebrate Slatington." The two DVD set of the Slatington Centennial Celebration is now available for purchase at the library. These DVDs were converted from the 16 mm film taken by Mummy Studios in 1964.

The volunteers from APRISE will continue to do Medicare Part D benefit checks on the third Tuesday of the month. Call the library to make an appointment.

The library is holding a $1 per bag sale. Books, puzzles, videos, audio books, anything that fit in a bag is $1.

The library takes donations of books but not encyclopedias, National Geographic magazines or Reader's Digest condensed books.

Library hours are from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m.-2 p.m.Saturday. The library is closed Thursdays and Sundays.
