SALISBURY TOWNSHIP SCHOOL DISTRICT Secure entrance work at Salisbury Middle School continues

The operations committee of the Salisbury Township School District met Aug. 4 to review ongoing projects within the district.

The secure entrance work at Salisbury Middle School continues. The work includes the creation of a vestibule area to increase the security for both students and staff. The entrance is framed and the doors will be in place prior to the beginning of the school year, according to Business Administsrator Robert Bruchak.

The entire project, including electronics, is expected to be completed at the beginning of September. Bruchak assured board members the building will be secure for the start of the school year.

Bruchak also informed the board a sinkhole developed at the tennis court at Salisbury Middle School. The hole, approximately 10 feet deep and 6 feet wide was on the side facing Western Salisbury Elementary School. Bruchak said the hole was filled in with nine and a half yards of concrete.

According to board members, electric and water drainage lines are under the court and Sam DeFrank asked if access can still be gained if needed.

Superintendent Michael Roth said Director of Maintenance, Building and Grounds William Brackett will continue to monitor the courts which are not used for tennis play. The high school students play at Lindberg Park.

In other business, the Marsie Barth Memorial Scholarship will be increased to $250 for one Salisbury student each year. The student must be a graduating senior who excels in athletics, band or music/chorus, demonstrates community service and displays significant leadership in the school community. The recipient must also be in the top 15 percent of his/her class and plan to attend a four-year school. The recipient may not have received another memorial scholarship. The award was previously $100.

Bruchak provided a bond update with the bond sale June 18 with a close date of July 23. The district will see $32,505.68 in additional savings than previously projected which will help offset the deficit from the state in the block grant reduction.

The district is currently still in negotiations with AT&T for a cell tower on district property. Two issues are still outstanding. The district would receive $26,400 annually to allow AT&T to place a tower on district property.
