DUI checkpoint
Between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. overnight Aug. 1 the Salisbury Township Police Department participated in a DUI checkpoint in the 1600 block of Broadway. A total of 24 police officers from Lehigh County participated in the checkpoint.
Officers made contact with 759 vehicles resulting in nine arrests for driving under the influence; five drug arrests; four alcohol arrests; six citations and one warrant-related arrest.
Risking a catastrophe
Jason Cienawa, 31, of Hazleton, was charged with risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct after police responded to Lehigh Valley Health Network hospital, 1200 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Aug. 2.
Police were called to the hospital on a report of a patient with warrants from Hazleton Police. Cienawa allegedly left the hospital against medical advice and fled toward Interstate 78 where he allegedly tried to flag down vehicles. Cienawa allegedly was seen in a wooded area near the roadway as police arrived. Police tried to apprehend Cienawa who allegedly continued to back onto Interstate 78 and try to get into a vehicle. After a brief struggle, police placed Cienawa under arrest. Cienawa was transported to the Salisbury Township Police Department then to the Lehigh County Central Booking Center. Pennsylvania State Police assisted township police.
