Sinkhole issue comes to a close

The legal wrangling over a sinkhole is over.

More than two years ago, the sinkhole opened up and damaged a home at 303 Florida Ave., Fullerton, to the point where the owners had to move out.

Whitehall Township administrators informed the commissioners an adjudication in favor of the township was made.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. in a report on Bureau of Zoning, Development & Planning activities, provided an update on the property.

The township charged Federal National Mortgage Company with several code violations and a hearing took place recently.

"The company pled guilty," Hozza said.

Fines of $25,000 per violation were assessed, totaling $100,000. The mayor said the fines were collected and the money is in the township coffers.

A second residence remains vacant after more than a year because of an alleged sinkhole. The home, located on Mickley Road, north of the Whitehall Mall, shows visible damage to the exterior. The Northampton Borough Municipal Authority crews repaired and filled a hole on the street months ago. There have been no repairs made at the property, which had a yellow tape there to ward off trespassing. The dwelling remains empty.

Sinkholes area caused by underground limestone deposits that become vulnerable, resulting in large gaps, often on roads, sometimes impacting water and gas lines.
