LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Mosser Drive dwelling possibly hit by lightning

Western Salisbury and Eastern Salisbury Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to a dwelling fire at 2973 Mosser Drive shortly before 10:30 p.m. July 27 after the homeowner reported lightning apparently struck his home and the smell of smoke was noticeable in the dwelling.

First on the scene was WSFD Fire Chief Joshua Wells, who reported nothing showing when he arrived on scene. As an engine and ladder truck arrived from Western Salisbury Fire Department, Wells detected fire in the enclosure surrounding the fireplace and chimney and interior firefighters said an active fire was found burning and hidden behind the walls as they pulled away walling material.

Realizing he had a working fire, Wells sounded a second alarm for help from South Whitehall's Cetronia Station, Lower Macungie Fire Department, Emmaus Fire Department and Alburtis Fire Department's Rapid Intervention Team. The RIT crew has no firefighting duties but is on standby in case any firefighter gets into trouble and needs immediate rescue.

Cetronia Ambulance Corps was on hand to provide cold water to overheated firefighters and to check their vital signs.

Salisbury Police assisted at the scene and Sgt. Donald Sabo, who also serves as the township fire marshal, was summoned to the site to investigate.

Lehigh County property records indicate the home is owned by Edward Jr., and Monica Olearczyk.

Firefighters were on the scene checking for hot spots and ventilating the home until after midnight.
