New middle school pool work under way
Don't plan on taking a dive into the new Northampton Area Middle School swimming pool just yet.
However, work is under way on the long-awaited replacement for the deteriorating swimming pool at the old Northampton Area Middle School.
"Foundation work, the subgrade work for the pool, is done," said Christopher W. Haller, senior project manager, D'Huy Engineering Inc.
The middle school includes a new swimming pool, cafeteria and library.
"We're kind of all over the campus to take care of things before the kids come back," Haller said in his report about the $80.7-million Northampton Area Middle School and Campus Renovation Project at the July 14 Northampton Area School Board meeting.
The first day of classes for the NASD 2014-15 school year is Aug. 25.
The three-story, 272,000-square-foot middle school, to accommodate 1,500 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, is to open for fall 2015 classes.
The campus project includes the new Stadium Drive, new athletic field (at the site of the current middle school), school bus drop-off area, middle school parking lot, field house and new track and field and football field at Al Erdosy Stadium.
In his middle school project overview, Haller said:
Third-floor middle school classroom construction is under way;
First-floor heating, ventilation and air conditioning duct runs are installed;
Three-story connection between classrooms and the common space is being built;
Roof trusses are ready to be installed;
Columns for the administration and library are set up;
Stairs from the middle school faculty parking lot to stadium have been built, and
Water and gas lines from the high school are in place.
"When we have good weather, masons are concentrating on load-bearing walls," Haller said.
