Discussion on mushrooms in Bethlehem

Rob Aptaker will discuss "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms at Home," July 24 at the United Steelworkers Hall, Bethlehem.

Aptaker will be the speaker for the quarterly meeting of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

Doors open 6:30 p.m. Presentation begins 7 p.m. Free admission, although donations will be accepted. On-site parking lot is accessible from 316 Center St.

The presentation will offer an overview of fungi home growers can cultivate, the ideal growth media for each, and techniques for inoculation and production.

Nutritional and medicinal properties of various kinds of fungi will be discussed, and sources for spawn and other supplies will be shared.

Aptaker will discuss the techniques for home hobbyists to cultivate and grow oyster mushrooms, shiitake and a variety of other delicious and healthful fungi with a minimum of equipment and materials.

Aptaker will be bringing fresh mushrooms for sale as well as oak logs inoculated with shiitake mushroom spawn and straw blocks inoculated with oyster mushroom spawn.

Local producers may bring grass-fed, organic, and/or biodynamic products for sampling or sale.

Attendees can check out the produce tables before and after the presentation. Bring coolers.
