Achuar topic of lecture

Mateo Shakai, a member of the remote South American tribe known as the Achuar, will speak about the Achuar, their threatened forest, and an Achuar museum that he would like to create in Ecuador, 4 p.m. July 26, Museum of Indian Culture, 2825 Fish Hatchery Road, Allentown.

His friend Sam Crothers, an Allentown resident and researcher who works extensively in the Achuar area, will also speak about life in the forest.

Mateo will bring handicrafts from the Achuar.

The Achuar are a small tribe of indigenous people who live in the remote rainforest between Ecuador and Peru. They live without electricity or plumbing, without cars, and without stores.

They live on the rivers in the Amazon basin, hunting with blow guns and growing food in small gardens. They are mainly cut off from the outside world except for small bush planes which bring supplies and a few visitors to their lodge, Kapawi.

Admission is free.
