Turnpike bridge to have six lanes

During subdivision plan discussions, Washington Township supervisors approved three plans needed to increase the size of the Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge from four lanes to six, Supervisor Gerald Phillips said.

At the July 1 meeting, subdivisions were conditionally approved for the William Jones, Washington Township and Michael LaSalla properties.

The condition for all was a planning variance showing the lots purchased by Trumbull Corporation would be noted as nonbuildable.

A detour has been set by PennDOT to handle excess traffic when the Pa. Turnpike is closed, which will only be some of the time work is being done on the three-year project.

Pastor Bill Ritzenthaler asked if an appraisal was done for the Washington Township property.

Zoning Officer Justin Yaich went to the office and returned with regulations stating that when land was sold to another governmental unit an appraisal is not needed. The Pa. Turnpike fits that description.

The Neas subdivision on Ashfield Road in the Blue Mountain Rural District is to be divided to give a lot to each daughter. Approval was conditional on payment of recreation fees.

Driveway permits were approved for 6132 Bottom Road, the church at 3045 High Hill Road, and 6264 Venture Court.

The annual Halloween parade was scheduled for Oct. 25. There will be road closures at Oakland and Route 873. Fire police will be at the intersection beginning at 5 p.m.

A new pickup truck has been ordered for $21,089 on a CoStars price from Sands Ford, Reading.

The township's small pickup truck will no longer pass inspection.

The board passed a resolution appointing Dwayne Henritzy as fire marshal.

He will enforce fire bans and is certified in arson investigation, arson scene search and evidence recovery, and hazardous materials. This is a volunteer position.

There will be a parade Aug. 16 in honor of Slatington's 150th anniversary celebration.

Washington Township roads will be blocked and a detour set up. Fire police will be assisting with traffic.

Road materials bids were opened.

They were Eastern Industries, $269,792; Lehigh Asphalt, $289,875; Livengood Excavating, $258, 556 and Bracalante, $273,991. The bid was awarded to Livengood pending review by the engineer.

According to the June workshop minutes, painting Old Mill Bridge will not be done because a state inspection showed repair work was necessary.
