State Police Beat

Dog killed

in I-78 crash

State Police Troop M Fogelsville say Billie S. Hoffman, 32, of West Virginia, was driving a 2012 Ford Focus 12:59 p.m. June 1 on I-78 East, Weisenberg Township, when its tires struck a depressed drainage grate on the shoulder and went flat.

The vehicle continued along the shoulder until its right rear and front side struck an embankment, before coming to a final rest along the right shoulder.

According to police, Anthony Armada, 33, of Hurricane, W. Va, a rear seat passenger, who police say was not wearing his seat belt, sustained injuries to his face.

He allegedly refused medical attention, police say.

Police say in a related incident, Larry G. Pleasant, 64, of San Antonio, Texas, was driving a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia when it struck Armada and a dog a few minutes later.

According to police the tractor-trailer combo was traveling east on I-78 in the right lane when it came upon Hoffman's disabled car stopped on the right shoulder.

Police say as the truck approached the vehicle, Armada opened the left rear door and exited.

As he did, a dog in the car ran onto the roadway. Armada followed the dog and tried to remove it from the roadway.

Both the dog and Armada crossed directly into the path of the tractor and were struck.

Armada walked to the roadside. The dog died from its injuries a short time later, police say.

Pleasant, who police say was wearing his seat belt, was uninjured.

Weisenberg Fire Company and Cetronia Ambulance Corps assisted at the scene.
