Schmoyer family celebrates 11th Independence Day in park

Thirty years ago, Carl Schmoyer III and his father Carl F. Jr. traveled to B.J. Alan Fireworks Company in Youngtown, Ohio to purchase fireworks for the family's Fourth of July backyard celebration.

This simple family tradition of celebrating Independence Day evolved 11 years ago into a colorful spectacular presentation for the Breiningsville community.

These days, Schmoyer travels with John Kemps of Celebration Fireworks in Slatington to Liuyang, China, to purchase fireworks for Breinigsville's celebration.

Clear blue skies and warm temperatures on Saturday gave way to cooler temperatures for guests attending this year's Schmoyer Funeral Home's Independence Day spectacular to celebrate the 238th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The fun began with CWTAP television personality Uncle Jeffrey broadcasting live at 3 p.m. from Earl Adams Memorial Park.

Children and adults awaited the fireworks celebration by playing volleyball, jumping rope, playing on the playground, having picnics, purchasing raffle tickets for the baked goods drawing, listening to The Municipal Band of Allentown, and participating in an old-fashioned patriotic sing-along led by Uncle Jeffrey and Schmoyer.

As dusk approached, fireworks aficionados sat on blankets, lawn chairs, bleachers, and lined the streets to find the perfect spot to see the night sky light up with colorful magic.

Music and patriotic songs rang out from speakers on the ballfield as members of the audience released colorful lanterns into the night sky as a preview to this year's pyromusical fireworks presentation.

As in previous years, Schmoyer addressed the crowd before the fireworks display with a brief presentation on the creation of the Declaration of Independence along with reading the 56 signers and their respective states.

Steve Oplinger, from Macungie, then sang the "Star Spangled Banner."
