One hundred and fifty local high school and middle school students participated in a recent two-day Envirothon competition and program.
The Lehigh County Conservation District conducted the annual Lehigh County High School Envirothon April 29, at the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus.
The event is a competitive environmental education program conducted at the local and state levels for high school students.
The event culminated a year of environmental studies for teams of five. The teams rotated through five testing stations in the areas of aquatics, soils, forestry, wildlife and sustainable agriculture/locally grown.
The teams took a written test at each station and the highest total score determined the winning team.
Eleven teams from Allentown Central Catholic, Catasauqua, Emmaus, Northern Lehigh, Parkland, Southern Lehigh and Whitehall high schools participated in the event.
Additionally, 19 teams participated in an Envirothon event on May 1 from Arts Academy, Catasauqua, Eyer, Lower Macungie, Orefield, Southern Lehigh, Springhouse and Whitehall middle schools. The noncompetitive event provided instruction and hands-on experience for the students.
