LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Salisbury Middle School sixth graders learn local history in the nearby outdoors

Sixth graders in the Salisbury Township School District's middle school, along Devonshire Road, in the western portion of the township, get a chance each year for out-of-classroom excursions as part of the school's local history curriculum during warm springtime weather near the end of the school year.

The excursions include lectures in the nearby Jerusalem Western Salisbury Church and cemetery, which date back to Lehigh County's Colonial era, visits to the riparian buffer along the Little Lehigh, the fish hatchery along Fish Hatchery Road, compass orienteering in nearby meadows and woodlands and other outdoor experiences.

Besides local history lessons, sixth grade teachers include math, ecology, agriculture, weather, climate, leaf patterns and other lessons best learned in a practical outdoor environment.

After a long, hard season of winter weather, a chance to get out of the classroom environment also provides a welcome change for students as the end of the school year draws near.
