Diesel fuel spill brings experts to bus garage

PRESS PHOTO BY KYLE MERTL

Around 11:20 a.m. May 28, firefighters from Eastern and Western Salisbury fire departments respond to the Salisbury Township School District bus garage at Gaskill Avenue and Emmaus Avenue for a fluid spill. Crews discovered an underground storage tank leaked about 40 gallons of diesel fuel up through the fill port and into the parking lot. The diesel fuel then entered a storm drain which empties into Trout Creek. Fire officials immediately had Lehigh County Radio notify the Department of Environmental Protection and the Lehigh County Water Authority. Firefighters reinforced containment efforts by school district officials and placed special hazard materials booms and pads in the creek to contain and soak up the fuel. Containment efforts were hampered by a sudden downpour. School district officials contacted a specialized cleanup company to handle the spill.
