Aungst earns win in Deppe Baseball Classic

In an all-star game, most people expect a heavy explosion of offensive.

And while that was that case, at least for one team, it was the dominant outing of the Colonial League and Mountain Valley Conference's pitching staff that stole the show on Saturday, June 7 in the 29th Annual Howard E. Deppe Senior All-Star Baseball Classic at Limeport's Fegley Stadium.

Following a first inning that produced a 2-2 score, the Lavender Team's (Colonial League/MVC) quintet of pitchers allowed just four hits and one run the rest of the way to drop the Orange Team (composed of players from the Lehigh Valley Conference), 11-3.

Salisbury's Justin Aungst, who was credited with the win after Lavender scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, found himself right in the middle of that rotation. He struck out five batters in the third and fourth innings, while allowing just one Orange hit.

Besides a few innings in the Blue Mountain League, it was the first opportunity in some time that Aungst was able to go out and take the mound. His performace certainly didn't look like he took a rest in the early weeks of summer.

"I felt good on the mound today," Aungst said. "I haven't pitched in a while. I took a little bit off, but I felt good coming out.

"I've pitched a few spot innings here and there for Blue Mountain League...so today I wanted to come out and throw a couple innings. And I felt really good."

Aungst finished the day 0-for-2 at the plate. Salisbury's Adam Ebner was 1-for-2 with a run in the ninth, and Brad Vangeli finished 0-for-2 and reached base on an error.

After Catasauqua's Zach Bradley allowed two runs in the first, he pitched a one-two-three inning in the second to get the pitching spectacle started. It was the first of four one-two-three frames for the Orange Team.

Pen Argyl's Devon Labarre allowed one hit and struck out four batters in the fifth and sixth. Palmerton's Nick Frey pitched two hitless innings in the seventh and eighth. Northern Lehigh's Matt Egan closed out the ninth.

"I haven't seen all of the pitchers that pitched for us today," Aungst said. "But it was good seeing what they have and what comes out of this game."

Nicholas Horinko of Wilson scored on a throwing error, and Catasauqua's Tyler Correll connected on a single that scored Palmerton's Nick Frey in the fourth to give Lavender a 4-2 advantage.

Lavender would not be threatened the rest of the way. That fourth-inning rally, which started with two Lavender strikeouts, only seemed to have sparked their bats as the game progressed.

In the sixth, Lavender reeled off five-consecutive hits after a strikeout began the inning. That start led to a four-run barrage.

While the Lavender Team provided much of the fireworks on the field, the game went beyond just the final score. It was an opportunity for the best players to compete against one another on the brightest stage. Still, the Colonial League/MVC squad was proud to show the area what its all about.

"You're playing against them your whole career, and then you have a day to come out and play with them to accomplish a goal of beating the LVC," Aungst said, "which is always looked as better than the Colonial Leauge.

"Today is not about wins and losses. It's about coming out and playing with the kids you have competed against all year and our whole careers, and having fun. If you win, you win. If you lose, you lose."

Frey scored on an infield error in the top of the ninth, and Correll's groundout scored Ebner to make it an 11-2 game. Emmaus' Jason Fatzinger, winner of the Frank Yelinko Hitting Competition, scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth for Orange.
