Independent pharmacy offering new way for customers to take medication

G&K Pharmacy, 4680 Broadway, in the Tilghman Square shopping center, South Whitehall Township, has found a unique way for customers to take their daily medications.

Shalu Gupta, who owns and operates the pharmacy, is now offering blister packs for multiple medications.

"I even include vitamins with a patient's medication blister pack," Gupta said. "Before I make a blister pack for a patient, I sit down with them and go over all their medications."

Gupta then obtains the prescriptions for all medications the customer is taking and compares everything on a list before making a blister pack.

"A copy of the list is included with every blister pack when given to a patient," she said. "I also keep a log and a week before the patient has a doctor's appointment, I give them a call.

"If they need a refill on a medication they can get the script from their doctor so they are not missing any medication."

In addition to working with the patient, she works with caregivers, doctors and independent living facilities.

She also will go to patient's home, if both the patient and she feel comfortable with her coming there, she said.

"I began making the blister packs six months ago because I think there is a need for them," Gupta said. "Each blister pack is broken down into morning, noon, evening and bedtime or can be customized to a patient's medication schedule."

"There is no charge for the blister packs," Gupta said. "They are great for travel because you don't have to take multiple bottles with you.My labels for each medication are included on each blister pack."

Gupta, who has more than 13 years in the pharmaceutical field, is a board certified oncology pharmacist.

Gupta, who received her doctor of pharmacy degree in 1999 from Rutgers University, has worked in hospitals, clinics, retail stores and managed a home infusion pharmacy.

In addition, Gupta is immunization certified and offers adult vaccinations for anyone over the age of 18.

Gupta said she opened G&K pharmacy, named after her children Gia and Krish, to put all her experience into one place and be a resource for customers.

G&K is a full-service pharmacy offering competitive pricing, free delivery, compounding prescriptions, medication flavoring for people and pets.

In addition to pharmacy services, the store carries Powerstep Orthotic's and offers 50-percent off on designer greeting cards in the retail section.

Gupta, her husband, Shekhar and children live in Coopersburg.
