Salisbury suffers first loss in summer league
Salisbury boys' soccer head coach Mark Allinson entered his CSG Falcon team into Group B of the Men's Junior Division in the Lehigh Valley Summer Soccer League to face a number of competitive teams across the area that they are not too familiar with.
After the first week of play at Lehigh University Fields at Goodman Campus and Stabler Arena, the CSG Falcons have made the most of their experience. They currently sit at 2-1 after Friday's loss to New Tripoli Bank FC, 2-1, in overtime.
The Falcons defeated Emmaus (3-1) last Monday and Pleasant Valley (4-3) two days later, two squads they normally don't see in the regular season.
"Typically we shy away from the 7:15 [division]," Allinson said. "We go into the 6:00 [division]; that's more where our Colonial League teams are placed. There are exceptions, but a lot more EPC teams are in this division. I wanted to get an opportunity to play against Pleasant Valley [and] against Emmaus. Typically Liberty puts their stronger team in the 7:15 [division]."
While Allinson gets to see his team, which includes 22 players, battle on the field roughly twice as week, he also understands that summer league is a place for improving and getting back into the normal routine.
"It's very competitive, and that's what I want out of it," Allinson said. "But I also want the recreational aspect of it as well."
Jack Bryan broke a scoreless match in the second half with a goal that put New Tripoli Bank FC in front.
But in the final minutes, the CSG Falcons were finally able to punch one of their 13 shots into the back of the net. Following a shot by Mason Groff, Patrick Adams cleaned up the rebound opportunity in front of the net to make it a 1-1 game in the final minutes.
As overtime got underway, New Tripoli Bank FC wasted little time in the extra session. Just minutes into overtime, Cody Gangaware's score lifted New Tripoli for its second win of the season.
Two of the Salisbury's top goal scorers from last year (Connor Wagner and Danny Walters) will be seniors in the fall season. There will be plenty of seniors leading the way for Salisbury once that time rolls around, but like Adams, an incoming freshman, a number of underclassmen have an opportunity to make noise in the high school season, too.
"It's a good, young squad," Allinson said. "We're going to be a senior-laden team, but I like what we have coming up. There are definitely some skill players that are coming up. It's obvious that they're training at a higher level, and hopefully that will pay some dividends for us."
Tyler Keller recorded five saves in goal for the Falcons.
The Falcons face the Pirates on Wednesday on Field 3. It is the team's only game of the week.
