Rotary Club of Allentown West member Bob Nagle introduced his granddaughter, Christine Nagle, to other club members at their recent meeting.

Christine is travelingto Oklahoma as part of Teach for America, a national teacher corps of college graduates.

In 2007 as a Northwestern Lehigh student, Christine was asked to help form an Interact Club at the school.

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored club at the youth level.

Christine became the club's first president and was a 2009 scholarship recipient.

On of the speakers was Tim Herrlinger, executive director for the Lehigh Carbon Community College Foundation.

He said what Rotary does with the scholarships is help answer the question, "Can I stay in school financially?"

Rotary's projects are built upon a 4-Way Test: Is it the truth, fair, does it build good will and friendship and is it beneficial?

Jerry Frank was the master of ceremonies for the scholarship presentations. He said an allocations committee screened the 44 applications and chose the eight recipients: two each from Northwestern, Parkland, LCCC and Lehigh Career and Technical Institute. Scholarships are awarded based on need and capability.

Recipients from Northwestern Lehigh included Jenny Von Holt, co-president of the Interact Club.

She will be attending Penn State.

Holt told Rotary Club members the most important word is "choose," and to choose wisely. Her parents are Wendy and Robert.

Alex Bobbyn, also a future Penn Stater, was captain of the football team. He told Rotary members the most important thing is to treat others with respect.

His parents are Tina and Lewis.

The Parkland recipient is Shannon Golden, who is heading to Kutztown University.

Golden, who is on the swim team, said she works hard to be a member of the team.

She is a member of the National Honor Society. Her parents are Kristina and James.

Parkland's Lindsey Iacobelli is heading to West Chester University.

She enjoys working at a soup kitchen and seeing the kids' faces light up when they get a good, complete meal.

Her parents are Sharon and Chris Iacobelli.

LCTI recipients are Katie Fogel, who is going to Wilson College.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, volunteers in several organizations and participates in student activities. Her father is Scott.

The other LCTI student, Samuel Guerrero, said he enjoys public speaking and helping others. He will be attending LCCC. Samuel was accompanied by his brother, Miguel.

One of the scholarship winners from LCCC is Jacqueline desGarannes.

She will be attending DeSales University. She was named Student of the Year.

Jacqueline volunteers in outreach programs and tries to inspire others.

She researched Rotary and found it a wonderful organization.

Her parents are Kathy and John.

The other winner from LCCC is William Harwi.

He will be going to Kutztown University. He enjoys tutoring and tries to be helpful. He is interested in education. His mother Pat accompanied him.

Jerry Frank said many of the essays showed an interest in integrity, which was based on honesty.
