Four Falcons named Lions All-Stars
In addition to playing for Salisbury during the high school soccer season, Katelyn Bucchin participates in club soccer for Lehigh Valley United, so she is accustomed to playing with a variety of different players.
This past weekend, Bucchin had the opportunity to play with a number of her club teammates once again, but in a slightly different setting.
During Sunday's 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic at Whitehall High School's Zephyrs Sports Complex, Bucchin was one of four Falcons named to the teams. Kori Hadinger, AJ Foulke and Austin Uhl were also recognized as all-stars.
"It was basically like club soccer," said Bucchin, who will continue playing soccer at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in the fall. "Half of the team was from my club team LVU, and it's great being out there again with them."
After Saucon Valley's Alicia Binn knotted the opening game at a goal apiece, Amanda McCarthy of Emmaus scored the final two goals to lift the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference girls to a 3-1 win over the Colonial League.
The Colonial League squad may have come up short on the scoreboard, but it gave the seniors one last opportunity to play together as high school players. And while Bucchin spent months competing against the likes of Southern Lehigh, Northwestern and Saucon Valley during the fall, on Sunday she called them teammates.
"I know a lot of them from my club team," Bucchin said. "It's just great being able to see them and not play against them for once."
Offensive and defensive Most Valuable Players were named for each team after both games. For the LVC/MVC girls, McCarthy was named the offensive MVP with two goals, while Kelsey Finn of East Stroudsburg South earned the defensive honors. Saucon Valley's Victoria Young earned defensive MVP recognition on the Colonial League side, and Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg's Angelica Bertola was the offensive MVP.
"It's bitter sweet," Bucchin said. "I just [wanted to] have fun with. I know all of these girls, and I didn't want to have any harsh feeling leaving the high school game. It was pretty much just for fun."
The Colonial League boys put together an impressive outing against the LVC/MVC squad in the second game of the Lions All-Star Classic.
A 2-2 game at intermission favored the Colonial League with two early goals in the second half of play from Saucon Valley's Will Demmel and Northwestern's Brandon Ettl. Northampton's Sam Gaye scored his second of the game in the 14th minute of the half to cut the LVC/MVC deficit to 4-3, but scores from Moravian Academy's Ryan Brown and Bangor's Matthew Palmer secured the 6-3 victory.
The Colonial League led 2-0 early with back-to-back goals from Notre Dame Green Pond's Gio Mowrey and Saucon Valley's Luke Masiaado 3:30 a part. But Parkland's Belal Mohamed and Gaye's first tally tied it in the final moments of the half.
Gaye's two goals awarded him offensive MVP honors for the LVC/MVC squad, while Parkland's Kyle Stengel was the team's defensive standout. Mowrey was the Colonial League offensive MVP with a goal and an assist, and Southern Lehigh's Matthew Dicker earned defensive MVP honors.
Pleasant Valley's Dana McAllister, Bethlehem Catholic's Marisa Iannelli, Easton's Matt Semanick and Bangor's Matthew Palmer were awarded scholarships for community service they had completed.
