Couple celebrates
70th wedding anniversary
Stewart Ray Rockwell and Mary Nicol were married May 31, 1944, in South Carolina as Stewart prepared to serve in the Army Air Forces in the European Theater during World War II.
Upon his return to the United States, "Rocky" received a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell University through the G.I.Bill of Rights.
He and Mary moved to Emmaus in 1951 and have lived there ever since.
During their 36-year business partnership, Rocky treated large and small animals, and Mary answered the telephone, kept the books and assisted in surgery after hours.
The couple raised six children. They were active members in the Emmaus Moravian Church. Rocky was president of the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association in the mid-1980s.
He was also a long-standing member of the Emmaus Rotary Club, serving as district governor from 1991-92.
Mary was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, always with humor and an emphasis on learning and fun.
The couple traveled widely, with many trips based on world peace through understanding other cultures.
Rocky retired from practicing veterinary medicine in 1986 and has enjoyed hobbies of beekeeping, wine-making, gardening and being in the woods with his chain saw and log splitter.
More recently, he keeps in touch with family and friends through Facebook.
Mary is an avid reader and history buff and enjoys jigsaw puzzles and lots of exercise, walking down their long country lane.
Mary and Stewart, in addition to being parents of six children, are the proud grandparents of 11 grandchildren and great-grandparents of 18 great-grandchildren.
Rocky says he wouldn't want to live this life over again because he might not be so lucky the next time.
