Falcons soar to six state medals
The talent and youth of Salisbury's track and field athletes was ever-present last weekend at the PIAA Track and Field Championships.
The Falcons left Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium with a total of six medals, highlighted by sophomore Lindsay Bauer, who stood on the podium twice.
"I am just so proud of everyone," said Bauer, who placed fourth in the Class AA triple jump (37-0.25) and fifth in the long jump (17-7.5). "We all support each other and we're a really close team, too. So it's great to see everyone's hard work pay off.
"I'm always cheering for them and they're always cheering for me. We just have a really close bond and I'm really happy to see everyone come out with a medal."
In addition to Bauer, who also qualified for states in the 400, two other underclassmen from Salisbury's girls team claimed medals at the meet. Junior Kaitlyn Toman earned a silver medal in the pole vault, setting a personal best with a mark of 12-0, while classmate Holly Szita finished seventh in the high jump at 5-2.
For Toman, the result was also an improvement on her fifth-place finish in the event last year.
"Coming back and improving on my place, and improving my jump by a foot is a great feeling," said Toman. "It just gives me more confidence going into next year, and hopefully I can take that next step on the podium."
Szita entered her event as the 16th seed and was thrilled with being able to get a medal.
"I'm really happy that I placed. That was my goal coming into it and I'm really happy that I was able to do it," she said.
Despite her low seed, Szita knew she had the potential to earn a podium finish.
"I knew that I could place and I wanted to push myself to set a personal best," Szita said. "I didn't do that, but I'm really happy with how I performed."
On the boys' side, the Falcons secured two medals. Senior Austin Uhl set a career best in the Class AA long jump with a mark of 21-8.5 to take third. After posting the fastest time in Friday's 1,600-meter qualifying race, junior Kyle Gonoude came back to post another impressive performance in Saturday's final on his way to a third-place finish.
