Church needs help with parking

Troy Markell, the head of the board of trustees for St. Peter's United Methodist Church, Emerald, told Washington Township supervisors the parking lines have been repainted in the upper parking lot at the church.

The lot was made more accessible for the handicapped, however, vehicles are parking on the street making it difficult to enter the lot, he said.

Markell asked the board if the area near the entrance could be marked no parking.

Solicitor John Ashley said if anything were to be done, it would have to take in account sight distance.

He asked if the no parking would be needed 24/7 or just on Sundays.

Markell said the sign is needed more than on Sundays because there are other events at the church.

Supervisor Josh Frie-bolin said the township does not want to force drivers to back out into the street.

Secretary JoAnn Ahner said Markell would receive a written response after supervisors have time to study the matter.

A Delaware and Lehigh Trail marathon will instead be only a half marathon this year.

The group asked for permission to use township roads and to have fire police at the intersection of Paint Mill Road and Route 873. The run will be Nov. 2.

The township paid $34,430 to NuPump to cover the cost of scouring the bridge on Lover's Lane. The bid had originally been for $39,000.

Only one non-local bid was received for clearing and mowing abandoned properties. It will be rebid.

Zoning Officer Justin Yaich said there are approximately eight properties that will need mowing two or three times in the year.

Painting the Old Mill Road bridge was bid in November. The only bid received was for $49,927. It has been accepted.

The Visiting Nurse Association was grateful for the $100 donation received from the township. The association's purpose is to assist homebound people.

The cost of a home visit may be $150 but the same care would be closer to $5,000 in a hospital.

Meals on Wheels received $100 for its use in seeing that homebound seniors receive meals that are ready to eat.

District Attorney Jim Martin thanked the township for its contribution to helping abused children.

Friedens Playground turned in its financial records and a budgeted $500 donation was released.

The Blue Ridge Cable franchise, begun November 1997, was extended for five years.

Friebolin gave everyone a reminder June 7 is cleanup day.
