Car hits NWL school bus in Lynn Township

Northwestern Lehigh School Bus 38 carrying 22 students was involved in an accident 3:02 p.m. May 15 at the intersection of Schochary and Owl Valley roads, Lynn Township.

According to State Police Troop M Fogels-ville, Timothy A. Lehman, 46, of Tamaqua, was driving a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire when it struck the bus, a 2008 Thomas Built Safe T line, in the middle of the intersection.

The bus was driven by Mariann Richards, 57, of New Ringgold.

Police say Lehman stopped at the stop sign then proceeded through the stop sign and apparently failed to yield to on-coming traffic, striking the bus.

The students, ages 12 to 17, from Kempton, Kutztown and New Tripoli were uninjured, police say.

Police say Richards, who was wearing her seat belt, also was uninjured.

Lehman, who sustained a major injury, was charged with traffic violations of stop and yield signs, police say.

The Sunfire was towed from the scene.

According to Northwestern Lehigh School District website, the car struck the driver's side rear panel of the bus, near the rear tire.

"The accident does not appear to be the fault of our driver," the website states. "Northwestern Ambulance Corps and New Tripoli Fire as well as state police assisted at the scene of the accident.

"No students reported any injuries to either EMS or to our school nurse, Susan Christ, at the scene," the website stated.

The students were transferred to another bus and arrived home an hour late.
