Weber, Uhl, Gonoude qualify for state track
Tevon Weber entered the District 11 track and field meet last week with a hope.
He left with a wish becoming a reality.
The sophomore finished second in javelin at last week's meet, held at East Stroudsburg South High School, with a new personal best of 164-02 that qualified him for the PIAA meet.
"I was just trying to place and do my best," Weber said. "Maybe even get a personal record. I was hoping that I could go to states and I think I accomplished everything I wanted."
Weber will be making his first trip to the state meet this week, which will be held on May 22 and 23 at Shippensburg University.
First- year track and field team member Austin Uhl will also make the trip to states. Uhl earned silver in the long jump with a leap of 21-2 1/2. His place qualified him for states as the top two finishers in each event automatically qualify, as well as any other competitors whose time, distance or height meet the qualifying standard for their event.
Uhl, a senior who also finished fifth in the high jump, knows what he needs to do in preparation for the last meet of the season.
"I'm just going to try and do my best," he said. "I really need to work on technique in practice. I'm hoping to place at states."
Since the track postseason has started, Kyle Gonoude has seen his confidence grow with each event and each medal he earns. Increasing right along with it has been the junior's sideburns, which he, along with some of the other distance runners on the team are growing.
"Me and some of the other distance guys on the team realized we all have the ability to grow beards," he said. "Unfortunately, I probably have the worst one," he said after the Colonial League meet two weeks ago."
He may have the worst beard of the group, but he definitely is one of the best on the track. Gonoude earned two golds, one in the 3200-meter run and the other in the 1600-meter run. His time of 9:50.17 in the 3200-meter run is one of his best this season.
Gonoude knows he is dropping the 3200 to focus on the 1600 and is uncertain on the future of his facial hair for this week, but is confident in what he wants to achieve at Shippensburg.
"I'd like to get a medal," he said. "I missed out on it last year and I am trying to make up for lost time right now."
Salisbury junior Bryce Fairclough has performed well in his events this postseason and has narrowly missed top-three finishes. At districts last week, Fairclough finished fourth in the long jump and took fifth in the high jump.
