ST. LUKE'S
Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and St. Luke's University Health Network are encouraging more residents of the Lehigh Valley and nearby areas to "Get Your Tail on the Trail!" during the launch of its second year.
Join D&L Trail, St. Luke's University Health Network and the Bethlehem Health Bureau for the kick-off event of the second year of Get Your Tail on the Trail: nearly 200 students, teachers and chaperones will walk the trails on Sand Island, learn history of the trail, interact with animals from Wildlands Conservancy and meet a live mule at the event.
Student leaders in participating Leader In Me ® schools, Calypso, Bangor, Donegan, Fountain Hill, Union Terrace, Salisbury and William Penn, will be challenged with the following: For schools that reach 5,000 miles and for those schools that reach 10,000 miles in Get Your Tail on the Trail, St. Luke's will donate $250 and $500 respectively toward fitness equipment or a program that encourages activity.
The kick-off for the event will be held 9:30-10:30 a.m. May 1 at D&L Trail at Sand Island, Bethlehem (meet at the basketball courts under the bridge).
Formal remarks will include speakers: Elissa Garofalo, president and executive director, D&L; Bonnie Coyle, MD, MS, director, St. Luke's Community Health Department; and Kristen Wenrich, director, Bethlehem Health Bureau.
The event also includes a check presentation by St. Luke's Auxiliary Virginia Oskin, president, St. Luke's Auxiliary and Maggie Prorock, chair, St. Luke's Auxiliary Fashion Show.
This is the second year of the Get Your Tail on the Trail program. The initial challenge launched in Spring of 2013 where 2,500 participants logged a total of 255,000 miles. The program continued through the winter of 2014 with 580 participants tracking 44,000 miles during the Winter Mini-Challenge. Launching May 1, the 2014 Spring Challenge lasts six months through November 2. Participants will register at www.tailonthetrail.org for this year's 165 mile challenge. Registrants will log miles via the Trail Tracker on the Get Your Tail on the Trail website and receive great prizes as milestone goals are achieved.
For participants looking for an additional challenge, extra prizes can be earned for doubling (330) or tripling (495) miles hiked, biked or jogged.
